    Hi,
I am using Netscape 8 browser and I have Java 1.5.0.8 installed which is the latest java I think. When I go to the Java test page, at the following Url - http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml - it reads the Java thingie and then says Congratulations, that I have the latest java installed and shows the version. But, the little java animation does not dance for me. In fact, he doesn't dance,or move in any way at all.

Can someone tell me if the little animation thingie, should dance, with the latest version installed and if it should, then what should I do to get it do move. Any help would be appreciated with this. Do I need to Uninstall and Reinstall or do something else related to Jave scripting? It does show the Java icon in the task bar over by the clock so maybe it is working, I just don't know.

When I go here and test my Java I see no dancing icons - just a message of congratulations when I test my installation of Java.

    VI,

The Duke no longer dances on that site for me either. I have an idea you are fine, especially in view of the fact that you have the Java icon in the system tray, and if that site, and Pete's link give the correct Version of the JVM.

Here is a weather site that uses Java. I clicked on "Loop" in the left panel so Java will kick in, and you will see movement on the map:
    http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=LIX&product=NCR&overlay=11101111&loop=yes

I have seen some differences since I upgraded to 1.5.0_8, comparing to v.7, but nothing important. I have a website, which was loading vert slowly, and was usable only when the coffee cup showed up in the systray. It loads faster, and no coffee cup. May be the Duke went out for coffee!

    Thanks Ramona and Pete !!
Pete, I get the same info as you on the site you use to test your java. so guess mine is working the same as yours is. and Ramona,I used your weather site and did as you said you did on it to check for movement and it works for me the same, so guess I am OK with theJava. Thanks to both of you for the help with this.

Hi Westside,Yep, Maybe the Duke did go out for a long coffee break, or either got tired of all that 'break dancing' he was doing. Oh well, As long as my cuppa java is showing up when needed, I am a happy camper.

Hmmm ... Java 1.5.0_8? Both the Java applet in Control Panel and the Java website tell me that I'm running the latest version ... 1.5.0_06-b05.

FWIW, the Duke doesn't dance for me, either, but in the Duke's Zone at java.com he cartwheels into view, waves at me, and introduces himself.

Apparently, this update does what Java did in the past with some previous versions. It is set to place an icon the the systray, the Applet Tag Support is set only for IE, and if I want to add NS/Mozilla, it won't let me. also the Duke won't budge for me.
I took a look at the homepage which I was using before, and it said that I needed the Java plugin, and that the latest version was 1.5.0_6. Now, my Seamonkey has the .dll files for 1.5.0_7. I remember that several time the .dll files were not written in the plugins folder of my Netscape/Mozilla/Seamonkey.
Is there a special download for the gecko program, i.e. what's cooking?
I copied the .dll files from the bin folder of Java, and pasted them into the plugins folder of SM1.0.4. Now, I see the icon, and the Duke's tricks. Where did you get the download? Or is the manual way, the way to go?

I can't get 1.5.0_6 to add the Systray icon, even if I check the box for it. So far as setting the Tag support, it's an either/or proposition on my two computers ... on both, I can check the box to support NS/Mozilla only if I uncheck the box for IE.

I still don't see how one gets the 1.5.0_8 (or 1.5.0_7, for that matter) download/installation, unless it's browser-specific. For instance, Vanilla Ice is running Netscape 8 and is told that JRE 1.5.0_8 is the latest version, while Westside is running several different versions of at least four different browsers, and is able to get both 1.5.0_7 and 1.5.0_8. I run only FF 1.5.0.6, on my two computers, and am told on both that JRE 1.5.0_6 is the latest version.

Perhaps it doesn't really matter, as long as Java does what it's supposed to do, which it does on both my computers.

    Westside,

FWIW, I always do a clean install with Java, using the Full Offline Installer, which I downloaded here:

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications. http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

I have no Java plugin files in any of my Gecko browser's plugin folder.

Also, the update feature within the program always says that there is no new update available. That truly needs to be fixed!

    Ramona ...

Thanks for the link. I downloaded JRE 1.5.0_8, uninstalled 1.5.0_06, and did a clean install of the update.

I don't see any real differences (if there are any), except that I'm not able to select any browser (IE or NS/Mozilla) in the CP applet ... I made the selection during the installation, though. The updated version works with FF, and that's all I'm really interested in. :)

    Jim,

In the Java CP, under the Advanced Tab, <APPLET> tag support, you are unable to select Mozilla and Netscape? I also made the selection during install, but when I checked the above setting, the Mozilla and Netscape option was unchecked. I did place a tick in the box, and it was retained after opening and closing the CP several times. However, this is all redundant if Java is working. ;)

It seems that Sun is always changing their download sites, and it's a challenge to find the offline install.

That's correct, Ramona, but as long as Java works, I don't really care whether I can make the selection.

Interestingly I can make the selection, but it says it is unable to change the settings. May be this is because I have IE 7 running as default browser and Firefox is closed?

Let me clarify ... I can make the selection (it's not grayed out) but, as soon as I click on either the "Apply" or "OK" button, I get a message saying that the browser setting cannot be changed.

But, Java works with Firefox, nonetheless.

Interesting indeed, as I went out for a bit, but first closed all open applications. When I returned, after starting Fx, and reading these Replies, I checked my Java settings again, and the Netscape and Mozilla setting was no longer enabled?

I didn't get an error, however, when I re enabled, but now it doesn't retain the setting. Curious, curiouser, and more curiouser...

Think I'll check the Java Forums to see if anyone else is complaining. Doubt it, as I said before, it is redundant since Java is working as it should.

    P.S.

    Pete,
I don't think it has to do with the default browser selection.

Not sure, but I thought this was discussed many months ago. All of the current actions / behavior with this Java setting has been that way for as long as I can remember. What would be new is if this setting displayed correctly. It was never an issue since Java has functioned correctly in these browsers.

    Dennis L,

Yep, it has been cussed, and discussed, but I have never been able to enable Netscape and Mozilla without an error. That certainly is new, but as I said, the setting is no longer retained... I was so excited, because I thought Sun finally fixed this bug, but no such luck!

My Java works fine, as long as I copy and paste the .dll files, but this has been going on for long time.
