    Hi, Crysti.

That certainly makes me wonder if that right-click planted something (or allowed something to be planted). AFAIK, I have never seen such a pop-up warning me not to right-click on something. Your experience makes me suspicious.

One thing we haven't tried yet is scanning for rootkit malware. Here are links for a couple of free rootkit detectors you might want to try.

    F-Secure Blacklight Beta

    SysInternals Rootkit Revealer

Both of those applications do not need to be installed. They are "stand-alone" applications that can be simply "run ".

However, Rootkit Revealer should be probably run while you are not connected to the Internet and you should not be using your computer for other tasks while the Rootkit revealer task is running. Otherwise, you are likely to see items displayed in Rootkit Revealer's results that appear simply because you were using the computer for something else at the same time.

Another thing to try is to investigate your system's startups and see if you can recognize anything that might be interfering. Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel is a handy utility for showing stuff that activates during boot-up. It might require some Googling on your part to investigate items you don't recognize.

Ok, I'll give it a shot when I get back!

So I need to shut down anything running in the taskbar to use it properly and disconnet from the Internet?

    Thanks Mailman!

    Before running Rootkit Revealer:
    • Disconnect from Internet.
    • Shutdown other items in the Task Bar.
I think the items in the System Tray (next to your clock) can be left as-is.

I'm not an expert at analyzing Rootkit Revealer results though. Someone else here might have better advice.

    Hi, Crysti.

By the way, you might also want to disable your firewall (after disconnecting from the Internet) before running the rootkit scans. My firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro) likes to complain when I run them.

Be sure to remember to reactivate your firewall before reconnecting to the Internet.

Please let us know how you fare with Blacklight Beta and Rootkit Revealer. If Blacklight flags anything or Rootkit Revealer produces any items in it's output, I'd be interested in seeing that information posted here so I can see what additional information I can find.

In regards to researching your startup items, here are a few places to look for descriptions of both good and bad startups (including recommendations) that might be more helpful to you and more efficient than Googling.

    Pacman's Startups List:
Pacman's Startups List is fairly complete/current and probably pretty reliable.

Here's another web page I bookmarked some time ago. I don't recall how I found the page and I don't know how reliable the information is. The information appears to be rather old (no mention of Windows XP, for instance). However, it might be useful for cross-referencing in some cases.

    Regarding Tasks:

Ok, Blacklight found 0 hidden items... I couldn't copy the log either but it had 42 processes running... that seems high eh?

I'll try the other one now...

    Hi, Crysti.

You might want to go straight to the 3rd link I provided under the Pacman's Startups List heading so you can download the list for offline viewing. :) That's specifically what I was thinking of for using to check out descriptions for the names of the startups you have.

EDIT: Here's a direct link to the self-executable version of Pacman's Startup List.

If that still seems like gobbly gook, that's OK. You can probably hold off on that idea for now. (I'm just trying to think of things. :)) Removing startups probably isn't going to help solve your problem, I guess.

I'm glad Blacklight came up clean! 42 processes isn't out of the ordinary.

HijackThis??? No, thanks. You already posted that a couple days ago. :)

However, if Rootkit Revealer found hidden stuff, that might be interesting to see. :)

Anybody else reading this thread have some ideas for Kittie Cat??? I'm running out. :(

EDIT: I'm starting to think of more dangerous options such as running a registry cleaner (such as the one in jv16 Power Tools because it has worked well for me). However, my machine was running pretty smoothly to begin with and mine is home-built. Kittie Cat's is a Dell, apparently with pre-installed software, and it's currently not behaving. I do not want to take the chance of mucking up Kittie Cat's "baby" even more than it is now.

    Hi again. :)

I just took another look at your HijackThis log and found something interesting about one of the O2 entries:

    O2 - BHO: Burn4Free Toolbar Helper - {60BF5EE3-0105-4858-AD98-17C19F86B042} - C:\Program Files\Burn4Free Toolbar\v3.1.0.0\Burn4Free_Toolbar.dll

    Here's what I found:

CastleCops Database info about Burn4Free_Toolbar.dll with a link to Sophos details about Burn4Free_Toolbar.dll

Therefore, I would advise trying to get rid of that. DO NOT proceed until you get advice from a HJT expert though. I'll post a reply to your HJT post so they are aware of it.

    Morning!

the BurnForFree was I believe d/l AFTER this right-clicking started... I SWEAR it was from me trying to copy a image online... I don't know HOW, but that is exactly when it started happening.....

I can uninstall the BurnForFree too, that's no biggie...that was just a program so I could copy my videos. :)

And shoot, I thought that program I did last night (the last one) made a log... but the one that appeared was the HiJackThis on my desktop... It DID find 2 older entries but the rest maybe 18 or so were from yesterday so they must have been from the installation of those 2 programs... I'll try again.. I DID save it but it isn't showing up.... hmmmmmm.

Mailman, you rock... thank you for your patience!

Other than this right-click thing.. my computer purrrs like a kitten, I have no other issues other than not being able to get rid of darned Mcafee...I'm going to see if it came with a disk and maybe re-install to Uninstall...But I somehow doubt it came with the puter....

Ok, I'll try that scan again. :)

    Thank YOU!!

    Hi, Crysti.

Maybe not directly related to your file pick/save issue but, since you're apparently a MySpace user, I thought I'd pass this post by Arie on to you. That post contains a link to a Network Security article you may find interesting.

Please exercise extra caution when you're on MySpace.

    Hi, Crysti.

That's GREAT news! Congratulations! You have shown a lot of patience and persistence. Make sure you reward yourself with something. :)

    Thanks for following up!

Hopefully I'll remember your fix if I see someone else with an image pick/upload issue with Firefox. :)

I'm having the exact same problem, with one exception: whenever I right-click anything to download, I get the error message "Filepicker was unexpectedly closed by windows" and firefox completely hangs, requiring a task manager force-close.

Background info: same story...my wife was looking at someone's blog and right clicked something to save a picture. It popped up a site-generated warning to not dowload their pics, and repeated attempts lead to this phenomenon.

When attempting a right-click--save as action in MS IE, the program just instantly closes.

Also, it appears that this problem spreads through parts of windows as well. While looking at my registry, I went to export to have a backup, and regedit instantly quit on me as well.

Through what I've seen, a "filepicker" is a low-level program built into windows and/or firefox that facilitates moving/saving/copying/downloading files.

I just ran a backlight scan with no results and I'm currently in the middle of a rootkit revealer scan. I'm also about to look over all of the startup stuff.

I can guarantee this is some form of malware that came via that first site. I've got symantec antivirus, but no scans catch anything.

Hi, voltron. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

Your best bet would probably be to follow the instructions in this link.

Then start a New Thread in the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.

In that new thread, please post details of your system's symptoms, post what you have already done to try to remedy your problem, and paste your HijackThis log there.

You might want to also include a link back to this thread and state your symptoms are similar to Kittie Cat's.
