Image to external HDD

When I first connected an external HDD to a USB port (1 of 4) I was able to image the OS in the same time as I have to an internal slave drive.

However, I would like to copy a modified image to the ext. drive. But since that first time I've added a new scanner and a dsl modem - both connecting to USB ports.

Recently tried to image the modifed OS to ext. drive and the estimated time shows like four hours. Purchased a four output powered hub - reformatted the drive started to create the image and time remaining showed 16 minutes - well OK, but that stopped at 12 minutes and the comp. froze. Had to do a reset and all works fine.

Do power hubs differ in performance? Not knowing, I picked on from the first vendor I saw.

I guess your external HD has it's own power supply so the question of a powered hub is not really relevant in terms of the power supply to the drive, but your USB may have been overloaded or got quirky.

No doubt powered hubs vary in performance a little between vendors, but the major difference to look out for is USB 1 vs USB 2 or HIgh Speed USB.

    Hello Trident,

The actual time is less than the estimated time and once the process moves along, the estimated time will go down.

Another factor is the compression ratio, the higher the compression factor, the longer it will take.

    Regards - Charles

PeteC: Agree with you that the ext. HD is self-powered. Have a high-speed hub, but as you say, I thought the USB ports might be o/l after installing the new scanner and dsl modem.

Christer: Am using Acronis TI v.7.0 and, to date, I've been satisfied with it. Thanks, for the link I'll read it through later.

charlesvar: Agree that the time is an estimate, buy what puzzles me is that it stops at the 12min. point and the machine freezes. Don't use compression.

Thanks, guys! What I may end up doing (just to satisfy my curiosity) is to disconnect the scanner and dsl modem and try to create and image again -- it worked once.

Strange, I can copy files, folders or photos to that drive, but when trying to image the OS, I get an error.

Second, the the case I bought says to set the jumpers on the HD to master. When I do this the drive is not recognized either in My Computer or PM8. But, when I jumper the drive as CS; I can format read and copy the files.

So, I guess, I ended up with a bad case.
