I have an internal D:\ drive CD R/RW and a G:\ external USB combo drive. Neither will auto play a game cd (Original vendor copies of BF2 and Civilization III). The activity lights will blink for 15 seconds, then cease and nothing will happen. I insert a CD and try to select it from Explorer...nothing. I try the run command...nothing.
When a CD is in the drive, My Computer shows an hourglass and will not progress past that point. I have tried switching IDE cables on the internal and even a different drive to no avail.
The moment I press the eject button, My Computer becomes navigable again.

I have removed both devices via Device Manager and windows found both and installed the drivers with no problem. I'm beginning to suspect my motherboard.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

PS> I was able to successfully burn an audio CD on the combo drive and it played back without problems. I ran AutoFix.exe and everything checked out.

Again I'll post an copy of HiJackThis logfile:

What procedure do you do for clean-up??

    Try this:

1 - Download and run CrapCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/

2 - Run updated versions of Spybot S&D and AdAware SE (one at a time), cleaning all that may be listed.
    Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
    AdAware - http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html
(remember to update databases before scanning)

3 - Perform an online virus scan from http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/ or http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html (or both if you want to).

    Thanks for the reply councillor

My procedure for clean up is this:

1.) Remove any programs. (as required)

2.) Run System Mechanic "remove Junk" function.

3.) Update and run Spybot S&D. Remove any offenders (it's usually just cookies)

    3.) Defragment all drives.

    4.) Install Programs. (as required)

I'll try **** Cleaner an an online Virus Scan. I do run Avast though.

Run Error Checking (chkdsk) on your C: drive.

Find updates for your motherboard/chipset drivers (specifically, the IDE drivers).

Your HJT log checks out clean - I see no problems there.

Thanks for the reply Pete, There are a couple of remnants from Norton System Works Antivirus that are still running even though I have long ago gotten rid of that resourse hog.

I have done a general maintainence of the machine, reseating the CPU HSF, and basically rebuilt the thing with the same parts...lol. Now at least I'm getting Autoplay from the External USB Combo drive, so I'm moving in the right direction...:D
