    Hi,
I have an old Compaq Armade 1520DM Laptop with a 133 Pentium.
I have my other computers running Win98 SE. I am using a wirless router to link them. I would like to link the laptop using wirless but in the store I was told this would be impossible and I should buy a new Laptop.
So my question is 'Can I in fact use the laptop and what should I buy'? I tried to upgrade the laptop with Win98 SE but it was rejected and I was told to use a different upgrade.
    Thanks
    Lewis

I'm not sure about the wireless thing, but.....
Were you using an upgrade win98 disk or the full version? If you were using the full version you can use it to upgrade your 95 but you have to rename the win.com file first. (found in the Windows folder) Rename it to win.old and then try the install. If something should go wrong you can always rename win.old to win.com from DOS.

Maybe you would like the dos command as suggested by Zander? Do this after booting with the floppy.
    ren c:\windows\win.com win.old
The 'upgrade' should proceed normally after this.

Could also be he has a disk that upgrades Win98 > Win98SE... that's not going to work upgrading Win95 AFAIK.

    Hi
Thanks for the info, if I understand the last post I cannot upgrade win95 to win98 se without first going to win98.
How would I go about formatting the hard drive and installing win 98 se.
I have a win 95 disk as well.
    Thanks
    Lewis

There is a 98Se Update CD, which installs fixes onto the original 98. There is also a 98Se Upgrade CD. It will say this right on the CD. This is the type of CD I have.
This Upgrade CD can do a full clean install of 98SE, or upgrade 95 to 98Se. This means you do not need to have 95 installed before using the Upgrade. During the clean install of the Upgrade 98Se, you will be asked for proof of a previous version. You would simply swap the 98Se for the 95, and Browse to the Win95 folder on that CD. For some reason you just can't put the 95 in and 98Se setup to find the files.
For later convenience, I copy the Win98Se setup files onto the hard drive. I do this for the reason if an install of updates, drivers, or software requires the CD, Windows in most cases will just access the Win98 folder on it's own, not prompting you for the CD.
This is my procedure for doing this.
Boot the computer, selecting With CDrom Support.
Just before A:\> appears there will be a message giving you the drive letter(s) for your CD drive(s). It will not be the letter you are used to while using Windows, in most cases it will the E. Use this letter in place of the X below.
    format c:
    md c:\win98
copy X:\win98\*.* c:\win98 << insert win98 CD before pressing Enter
    c:\win98\setup.exe << starts install of 98Se

You will be prompted for the Win95 CD after the license agreement, after it is scanned remove it.

If you choose the other method of just installing off of the CD. Just do the CD swap at the appropiate time.
    format c:
    X:\win98\setup.exe

Does your laptop have a ethernet port?

If so you could use game console wireless adapter which needs no drivers.
    http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=119806&

a bit bigger than a usb one but handy if you cannot get any wireless drivers for your OS - like XP x64 or win 95/98
