I cannot send mail from Netscape 7.1. I get an error that the SMTP is not set right. I use Pacbell as my ISP and have tried mail.pacbell.net and smtpauth.sbcglobal.net as the outgoing SMTP's with no luck. I have my user name set as my full pacbell e-mail name and have tried just the first user name without the @pacbell.net. Please help me as I am lost without my outgoing mail on Netscape. I can use IE 6.0 which I have but I hate it. Thanks, regards, BobFam.

I found this setting listed in two searches. Pacbell :mail.pacbell.net, although I don't know what is the current way.
You should be able to send, equally well, in Netscape and IE6.0, at the website. IE6.0 does not have mail, so you would not have any luck there, although it should work in Outlook Express, which you should set up, if nothing else to test the settings.
I have no way to find out what is current for your mail, nor do I know which settings you have in your Netscape. If you can use the smtpauth. way, it stands for authenticate that you are the sender, so your list, if any, of Outgoing Mail servers should have a smtpauth entry, with your address checked. How should your address be entered, I don't know, but you must make sure that you are using it. Not sure where 7.1 uses that info, somewhere in the server settings, or account name|Advanced button. I don't have 7.1, but you should make sure that your pacbell account is set to use the smtp. Everything else may be correct, but it won't help unless 7.1 knows it, and it is not so user friendly.

    Thanks

I appreciate the help. Yes I did mean Outlook. There is some setting somewhere in 7.1 that prevents me sending. Regards, Bob.

    Question

Does the outgoing SMTP connection require a Certificate? If so, what is it, and where can I get it, and how do I install it? Maybe that is my problem in Netscape since it works OK in Outlook. Regards, Bob.

No certificate is needed. Unfortunately, I don't have a screen capture of the account set up. And, I know nothing about mail set up in Outlook, but you should have the same settings which work in Outlook, first for the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) of NS7.1. So, what is the setting, which works, in Outlook. Is there any check mark by it? secondly, if you have the correct SMTP in NS7.1, is your account set up to use it? As I said, it may not be obvious, you may be in the account name page, or in the Server settings page, and you have to click on the Advanced button. That is not user friendly. Now, if you set up your account originally with any SMTP, it is your default account, and if you try to use a modification or a different SMTP, you will have to either add it, first, to the list, or select it, if you have more than one.

Hi. Thanks. I have the exact same settings in Netscape as in Outlook. There is something within Netscape that prevents me sending e-mail. I had this setup in Netscape for years and had no problems until I installed the XP SP2 upgrade. SBC is of no help as it is probably some setting in Netscape which they don't support. I am hesitant to call the Netscape support line as it costs $19.95 and all I am going to get is someone offshore who I can't understand. Thanks and best regards, Bob.

I will ask someone else to take a peak to your issue. I am not sure what SP2 would do, but I hesitated for over a year. I have Cox as ISP, and, although they do not support Netscape, they do support Mozilla Thunderbird . Check if your ISP supports it. If not, there is the advantage that more people use TB than the old Netscape. You NS settings can be imported as you set up TB. The only limiting factor would be if you have, still, an old version of your SMTP as default.
Keep in mind that Thunderbird is a mail client only, just as Outlook Express is.
One more thing. Which username, and which SMTP do you have in Outlook? Just tell us if it is "username ", or username@pacbell.net, and what is the smtp? The old pacbell or sbcglobal?

Welcome to the Forum, Bob Fam!

    Bob Fam,

Here are some basic workarounds/settings which you might want to check:
    Can't Send Mail
    .

Since your user name is the entire email address, then try this:

Open Notepad, and add this script:

    user_pref( "mail.allow_at_sign_in_user_name ", true);

Now click on File | Save
    Name the file: user.js

Save the newly created user.js file to your *.slt folder, located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt

    Bob Fam,

Found this on a Google search:

After installing SP2, if you have the Windows Firewall enabled then you may need to add an exception to the Windows Firewall, to allow Netscape to send mail.

Hi Ramona. Thanks. I tried that and it did not help. I still can't send. Are there any Certificates I need which maybe I don't have? I'll look at the other info. Best regards, Bob.

    Bob,
are you using the windows' firewall? You don't have to use it. You can disable it, and use the Firewall of your choice. I am using Sygate.

Here are some basic workarounds/settings which you might want to check:
    Can't Send Mail
    .

Hi. I tried all that was in the above, with no change, except I did not understand this:

Also check your preferences in about:config

    Clear the Location Bar field
Type this text in the blank field: about:config
Using Netscape 7.1, scroll down to this setting: mail.smtpservers

    Using Netscape 7.2, or Mozilla
In the blank "filter" field type this text: mail.smtpservers
Highlight the setting, and right click
If there are duplicate SMTP servers, then select: "Modify "
Remove the duplicates and close the window
    Exit Netscape / Mozilla
This edit will now appear in the prefs.js file
Always back up the prefs.js file before editing.

Where is this about:config? Please explain more. Thanks, regards, Bob.

    Bob,

The "about.config" can be accessed this way:

    Clear the Location Bar field:

The Location Bar is the field which contains the "http" web page address
Highlight the link which is current, and it will turn blue
Delete that web page address, and then type this text in the blank field:
    about:config (see this Screen Shot)

Using Netscape 7.1, scroll down to this setting: mail.smtpservers

What is shown there, if anything?

BTW, there aren't any certificates that you need.

    Bob,

If you don't require authentication in order to send mail then it appears to me that this entry:

    mail.smtpserver.smtp1.try_ssl

    should have a "Value" of "0 ", rather than "1 "

I believe the Value of 1 indicates that you use SSL (a secure connection).

    In the Preferences:
Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings
Did you have "Use Secure Connection (SSL)" enabled?

I set it to "0" and unticked it in the line that asks for ssl connection. It still won't send. I get the same error. I rechecked the prefs to make sure it stayed "0 ". Thanks, regards, Bob.

    Bob,

Could you post the exact error? That would be most helpful, and thanks!

    Here it is:

    Send Message Error

    Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server mail.pacbell.net failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and try again, or else contact your network administrator.
    OK

I have contacted my ISP and the settings are correct. They are the same settings as I do use on Outlook. Thanks, regards, Bob.
