Apologies if I have posted in the wrong forum but I could not find a specific forum for my query.
    ....
The Zone Alarm icon on the task bar indicates that it is updating. It seems to be stuck in this mode but I cannot see any activity. I changed the option in Zone Alarm from Automatic to Manual but still have the same status.
Any help would be most appreciated.
    This is my first post.
    Best wishes,
    Peter

Hello Peter and welcome to the Board,

What version of ZA? Free - Pro, or the Suite and the version number.

Normally the Icon will always show some Net acitivity but does not indicate updating of ZA unless you have the Suite and its updating the AV or anti malware definitions.

    Regards - Charles

    Zone Alarm problem (contd)

    Hi Charles,
Thanks for the quick response. Much appreciated.
My Zone Alarm is the free version. The version number is 6.5.731.000
I initially changed the automatic update to manual in an attempt to clear the problem. I then thought that maybe I had interrupted the process and returned the update to automatic. After a few minutes the icon returned to its normal state (ie showing no update in progress).
Although the problem seems to have gone away I am puzzled that no update download is shown in my downloads folder except of course for the previous update that took place some weeks ago !
Can ZA internet activity be mointored somewhere ?
    Best wishes,
    Peter

    Hi Peter,

    In the interest of clarity:

The auto/manual updates you're referring to control the way Software updates to ZA are done - newer versions, and are fairly infrequent, sometimes months, so I'm confused as to what updates you mean and what's in the download folder.

If thats what you mean, keep in mind that any program that is set to automatically check for updates will do so at some regular frequency, much as an AV will. I'm running ZA Pro v6.5 have it set to manual. Sometimes I check, but mostly I become aware of a newer version thru forums.

The Icon shows all internet activity, whether they be updates to any program on your system, files downloads, or the activity that takes place now as you read and respond to my posts.

    Regards - Charles

    I have this same error.
What happens is the icon in the tray shows that Zone Alarm Pro (in my case) is updating. But there is no activity. In fact there is no download taking place. If I try to shut it down, I get a popup that says please close all dialogs before shutting down.
I performed an uninstall. Did a reinstall and it came back. I also had to reformat my HDD and reload XP Pro. On this cleaner install it came back again!

Additionally if you try to stop the updclient.exe in the wiondows task manager it gives an error unable to terminate this process. Access Denied.

    Hello Rebelranger and welcome,

I suggest you post this on the ZA forums: http://forums.zonelabs.com/zonelabs and see what they come up with.

Post it under the General section since this seems to happen to the free version as well.

I assume you have the latest version.

    Regards - Charles

I also use the free version. However I have gone back to the version 6.1.744.000.

The versions that have come out since they incorporated some change having to do with gaming have been getting hosed in the forum. It seems to not affect some machines and causes great havoc in others. That's why I went back and am laying in the weeds waiting for a new version that has no complaints.

My free does not do as you reported and I have it set for manual updates.

    Hi Bill,
You're going to have a long wait, don't think there's been a version yet w/o some complaint. But, yes, some are buggier than others - the early 5x versions come to mind.
Excellent idea. Auto updating wipes out a previous version's setup exe, making it harder to revert back. I save the ZA setup files along with other App's setup files to a folder and acrhive them.

    Regards - Charles
