All of a sudden IE would no longer go to links within email in outlook express, and would not go to links within other web sites that cause a new page to open. It will open a new page and show the old page underneath it but nothing else will happen the world keeps spinning and spinning. I discovered that it is links that have "target=" in the <a href> tag that cause the problem.

I found an article that said to reregister the urlmon.dll file so i followed the directions mutiple times and that didnt work. i think the problem started when i downloaded and started using HTML-Kit, an html editor. i uninstalled html-kit and reinstalled IE6. didnt work. i registered urlmon.dll again. didnt work. i'm stumped. if a windows system file is corrupted and not fixable do i have to reinstall windows 98 or can i just replace one file? oh yea and i used internet explorer repair a couple of times to no avail. havn't got any error messages that seem to be related either. it just wont go to those links.

any help would be appreciated. thanks

I followed the instructions in the article, and did something from another article which was to uncheck the DDE box in the url:hyper text protocol and to type in %1 after -nohome. its wierd because when i go back to that one the long file name is still there and the DDE box is still unchecked but the %1 is not there.

any way now the links from within my email work great (thank you), but links within other web sites that will cause another page to open dont work.

    <a href= "http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q177054" target= "_blank ">this</a> page help at all?

that is a copy of the code for the link you put in your first post. so it doesnt really matter what you put inbetween the 2 arrows where this is. it is the "target= "_blank" that causes a new page to open.

if the "target= "_blank" was not in there it would cause that link to open in the same page and it would work fine for me.

it is the links that cause a new page to open that wont work.

when the email links started working i thought for sure that these would too. but they are not.

there is the code for the link in your 2nd post since they both have target= causing another page to open they wont work. its screwy i know. why is the email working now and not the these links? i dont know.

ok i got the %1 to stay and it still doesnt work.

    "C:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome%1

that is in the url:hypertext protocol

so in a nutshell its not working when an IE window is already open with a web page in it, and it tries to link to another web page by opening a new window. the new window will open but it wont connect to the other web page.

daizy, sorry im posting so much but im keeping whoever reads this up to speed on where im at.

    ive registered the following files:
    regsvr32 Browseui.dll
    regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
    regsvr32 Shlwapi.dll
    regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
    regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
    all were succesful except shlwapi.dll
on that one it says- dllregisterserver may not be exported, or a corrupt version of shlwapi.dll may be in memory.
im not sure how to fix that. surely there is a way to replace it with a good one.
    thanks.

    Hi again zinco
Under tools....internet options...then the advanced tab......do you have: reuse windows for launching shortcuts checked?

    *edit*
Please don't apologize for posting too much. There's no such thing. It's wonderful that you're taking the time to let us know what you've tried so far.

i just tried with that box unchecked and that doesnt work so i checked it again. it seems the "target= "_blank" command in a webpage overrides that box and causes a new window to open....and then nothing. it wont connect to the url.

well the next thing i did was run the system file checker and one file showed up as bad- setupx.dll, so i replaced it from the disk......didnt work.

what i dont know how to do is to replace a system file manually from disk such as those mentioned in above post.

also am i correct in assuming that if i completely reformat windows 98 that everything will have to be reinstalled from a back up disk?
if i buy another hard drive and copy mine to it can i then reformat my existing hard drive and then copy the stuff i want from the back up? i have room for one more IDE hook up. that can just go in another drive location can it not?
or would buying a cd burner and backing up that way be a better way to go? how much does a cd hold? my i am just full of questions. i would like to solve this without reformatting if i can.

    Hi zinco
Well before I would consider a format, I'd try re-installing 98 on top of itself?
Yes, if you reformat...you'd have to reinstall any and all software.
Using software such as Ghost to clone your hard drive would most probably be the best route to take if you want to copy from drive to drive. (I'm sure you'll get differing opinions on this however)
Yes, you can add another hard drive if you have room for it. Are you running out of room on the hard drive you have presently?
A CD rewriter is a handy thing to have. I wouldn't be without mine. Most CD's hold approx. 700MB (Give or take 50 MB or so) To give you some perspective on that? A floppy holds 1.44MB.

    hi daizy,
thanks for all your help. that IE prob has me baffled. i would try just writing over a few .dll files that may be causing the problem from the disk if i knew how. i might figure out how to do that.

let me get this straight though. if i reinstall win98 from the cd and write over all the files it WILL NOT affect the rest of the soft ware on my hard drive?

yes my 20 gig hard drive is almost full so i think i will buy another anyway and ghost it. then i could take one out and put a burner in its place.

thanks again for all your help daizy

    Try choice 2 .

    http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/ie50-11.shtml
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q194177
    W95 you have 3 choices . With W98 , if you have IE5.1 or higher & you
still have IE4 installed the following applies . No IE4 only 2 choices .
    IE5.5 if over the top of 5.1 , offers 3 choices .

You can install IE5.1 straight over 4 . A big feature with IE5 is that
it can be repaired without uninstalling . Here is how to do it . Open
Control Panel , Add / Remove , click on Microsoft Internet Explorer ,
then click on add / remove down the bottom . This opens a window with
    3 choices .

Choice 1. Add , insert your IE5 install program & you can find other
items you may not have installed 1st time .

Choice 2. Repair , fixes problems that may crop up with IE5 / Outlook

Choice 3. If unfixable , removes IE5 & goes back to IE4 , now if you
want to you can reinstall IE5 or a later version or another browser
    altogether .

No Microsoft Internet Explorer in Control Panel !
    http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/ie50-11.shtml
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q194177
Start > Run , type in msinfo32 and press Enter . Click on Tools > IE Repair Tool or Start >
Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information . Click on Tools > IE Repair Tool .

Internet Explorer Repair tool from a command prompt:
    http://www.windows-help.net/windows98/ie50-11.shtml
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q194177
Click Start , and then click Run .
In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK :
    rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"
NOTE : This command is case sensitive.

    W2000 > Start > Run
    then enter exactly (case/space-sensitive)
    rundll32.exe setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance
this will give you the IE Repair dialog... proceed to repair IE

To improve on the 5 days MS have on registry backups , use the Cabrest system below & get 14 days .
    http://www.pcnineoneone.com/howto/regback1.html

For those that find the above site confusing , here is what to do .

Alter MaxBackupCopies from 5 to 14 in scanreg.ini ( as per instructions at above site )

Download the zipped copy of the Batch file from ,
    http://www.pcnineoneone.com/downloads/cabrest.zip

Unzip , copy & paste cabrest onto the top of C: in Windows Explorer .

Delete zip file , or save it on floppy , if you want it for others or the
    future .

Print the instructions below & stick on your comp in front of you , so
when you have to go back to a good copy of the registry , you don't
need to search for them .

    ------------------------------------

Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMA pool message comes on ) or Press Ctrl
during bootup , depends on your computor .

Select , Command prompt only .

Type in cabrest & press Enter , keep answering y & you will see a
table , which will allow you to select which CAB file to restore from .
So , for example , to restore from rb009 cab , you look at the table &
see 09 corresponds to the letter j . You type j & Not the number .
    Follow instructions .

Type win & press Enter to exit .

If after following the instructions to Restore , things arn't
working , go to an earlier date & try again .

Registry Backup backs up the Windows System Registry like none other program, because it uses
DOS as a frontdoor to the backing up process, an enviroment where the the Registry has the least
chance of being corrupted. It also makes the backup process simple by making everything
automatic. It will not only backup the registry automatically, but also restore it automatically
    when needed.

    hey,

i fixed it. WOOHOO. i repaced the oleaut32.dll file.

Note: i also replaced the krnl386.exe file because i kept getting an error message ....exporer caused a general protection fault in module krnl386.exe....... when i tried to open folders in my xerox printer/scanner control center. replacing that file didnt fix that problem, but i forgot to check my IE problem after doing it. I had to reinstall my printer software to fix that one and it worked.

Im 99% sure it was replacing the oleaut32.dll file from win98 disk that solved my IE problem.

Side note: when i restarted in dos mode to run scanreg/restore.....and chose a date it said operation failed both dates i tried. i dont know about that one.

thanks daisy and jmatt for the help!!!!
    mission accompished!!!!!!

    Nice work zinco .

Just a few explainations to your last post .
If you used the scanreg /restore command ( note the space after scanreg ) correctly , no result means you did not go back far enough on your dates . This week , a problem reared it's head on my comp & I had to go back 7 days to find a good copy of the registry . Cabrest with it's 14 days backup of the registry came in very handy .

The repair feature in IE , probably would have fixed it's problem . All you lose , are the History files .

I find both the above fixes are always worth trying 1st , as they only take 5 mins .

Anyways you got there eventually , as with everything in computors , there is always more than 1 way to do things .

    Cheers .
