    Hello rondom,

Are you trying to erase some files or the entire CD and what software are you trying to do it with? Please answer the what software you're using question, very important.

Depending on the software you used to burn the CD and how it was closed out, you may or may not be able to delete individual files.

For erasing the CD, if you're using XP, type erase CD into the search box of the Help and Support applet on the start menu for the instructions.

If your OS is not XP or you have a 3rd party cd burner, then there should be an erase CD option - could take the form of "format the CD ".

    Regards - Charles

This is what I got in help & support: I did not see writing tasks, erase this CD-RW or the Writing Wizard. I do have XP.

Also, after putting the Cd in I get this message: Sonic DLA, DLA can read files on this disc but you will not be able to edit or add to them. Under details in my computer it shows Cd Drive, File System UDF and Free Space 0 Total Size 540 MB. The files on the disc total up to 19,000 KB. What is also confusing is, I have used a disc from the same package with other files and do not have this problem. I was never quite clear about formatting disc so I can't tell you whether I did format or not. I assume if I got a message to format I would. I do not get the DLA message when I install another disc.

From Help & SupportTo erase files from a CD
    Open My Computer.
Double-click the CD recording drive. Windows displays the files and folders located on the CD.
Under CD Writing Tasks, click Erase this CD-RW. Windows displays the CD Writing Wizard.
Follow the instructions in the wizard to delete the files on the CD-RW.

what software are you trying to do it with? Sorry, I didn't answer the question. I simply select all the files and click delete the selected item on the left File and Folder Tasks where there is a red X. It then says cannot delete 04031010. The file is write protected. Remove the write protection or use another disc.

    Hi rondom,

Is confusing - You cannot select certain files to delete; you must erase the entire disc.

What might have happened is that in creating this cd, it was closed out permanently, I don't know. How did you create it, with Sonic?

Do you want to keep some of the files, or just erase the disk for re use?

If you want some of the files, download them to a folder on the HD and re write them to another disc.

To clear this particular disc if you can't do it thru XP, format it (quick format) with Sonic. I'm not familiar with Sonic but there should be an option within it to do that.

    Regards - Charles

Thank you for your input. I ended up doing the quick format and, zip, done in a few seconds, Yes, I just wanted to be able to use the cd and get rid of all the files before. I really don't remember what I did when I first used the cd. I use whatever the Dell desktop I have has and in this case it has Sonic. Since I used it only for backing up a program I have, could the program backup have the ability to cause a cd to be write protected? Perhaps because I have other cd with other backups and no problem deleting files. Other than that, it would be helpful to know what happend.

    Hi rondom,

    Thanks for the feedback.
Now that you know that you can erase a disc with Sonic, you can experiment and re do this particular backup and see how it goes and watch the options for the burn. I don't know what "closeout" options Sonic has.

    If it helps.
DLA is Sonic's UDF reader, maybe it is not a UDF format writer (at least I have not tried writting with it). The UDF formatted disk may have been made with another UDF program like Nero's IN-CD or Adaptec's Direct CD.

Read the Help information about DLA. It should be in All Programs under Sonic or there may be a manual in the Sonic folder.

You have both done well to find the cause or at least find a way to overcome it.

    Matt

Mattman, I think you solved a mystery. when the Cd was first used I had an IBM with adaptec. But also sonic. It's a bit too tech for me but since I have Sonic on my Dell, is there anything I should know about using disc and/or deleting files? I don't think I've had any proble in past 2 years since using it. Thanks for your follow up. It is very helpful.
