I posted this elsewhere on this BBS, but haven't seen any response. I'm hoping to get an answer here that I couldn't on the Google Desktop forums.

I find the Google Desktop very handy, but one problem is causing me to think I need to dump it. On boot-up while it loads in the tool bar and appears to be working, it holds up use of the system for about 5 minutes.

A message "Google did not start-up successfully" then appears, and the system is free. As I said GDT seems to work at that time.

I've tried setting it to not load on Start-up but can't get around that. Some have suggested GDT only works with SP2 of Win Xp Pro, but three emails to Google have gone unanswered.

(Unfortunately, my PC by Gateway will not take the SP2 update.)

    Hi Cal,

I'm bumping this thread to see if you get a response and have added to your title.

I personally don't use Google Desktop.

I see that you can't update to SP2, and I'm sure there is a history there, but what steps did you go thru?

Did you ever try a slip streamed (SP2 incorporated into the install disc) re install of the OS?

    Why no SP2

I appreciate your suggestion and will check it out after a good backup.

Briefly, the history on this is that Gateway's reps told my that my model PC (Model: E-6000; BIOS: Intel Corp. MV85010A.15A.0075.P13.0209191141 09/19/2002; CPU: Intel Pentium 4, 2400 MHz) has had numerous reports that after an SP2 upgrade, had many problems. They even gave instruction on how to suppress the MS notice that I needed to upgrade.

At one point I was sold a newer processor chip which was supposed to get around the problem. However, it would even physically fit my chip socket, and I had to return it. (As an aside, I now worry about heat problems because one of the mounting springs broke in the replacement process and so only one side of the chip is making a solid connection. I always was sold on GW, but now I'm contemplating going elsewhere for my next unit.)
