Had same problem and ISP recommended using an external modem, which is working fine now!

I run 2 xp laptops and my reliable w98 standard desk top off a SMC router connected to Road runner. Every so often I will lose my connection, either within my lan or to RR, for no reason. Modem lights all fine but not pulling an IP from RR. Solution is to reset the router manually, small button, if I'm stuck off line, or to reset the router via SMC web site if problem is within my lan. No rhyme or reason why this happens or when it happens. BTW the 'networking' wizard in XP is a nightmare and always causes me problems.

I had a strange thing happen that perhaps somebody could explain. At one point I noticed that my cable modem connection was out, though the lights on the modem looked the way they usually do when all is ok -- I went to Settings / Network Connections, and the "status" for the NIC that the cablem modem is plugged into said "Disabled" -- so I doubleclicked it, clicked the "Enable" button, and poof! everything was fine. And it has been ever since.

I have no idea how it became disabled -- any clues on what can cause this? (Nobody else uses this computer.)

You might also try renewing your ethernet lease. In a DOS box type "ipconfig /renew" without quotes. Works in WinXP but don't know about other versions. I use this instead of a reboot when I forget to turn on the cable modem before booting.
