For some strange reason when I installed Windows XP (one day ago) I occassionaly lose my cable modem internet and have to shut down and restart.

Does anyone know what I need to do to eliminate this problem.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Anne,
This sounds like one of the times I'd be calling my ISP. But something to try? Do a modem dump. Shut down your computer.... unplug the cable from the back of the modem.....go have a coffee for 10 or 15 minutes (or longer if you like :D ). Come back.......plug the chord back into your modem...... let the lights finishing blinking......then reboot.
    Worth a shot?

    Thank you for your reply.

I have already done that while waiting for suggestions and it seems that it hasn' t happened all day so perhaps that was exactly what it needed.

    Thanks for your suggestion.

Assuming you are not using a USB cable modem, check the Properties for your ethernet card. If there is a Power Management tab, disable any power saving options.

    Anne,
I had the same problem. My ISP told me I would have to stop using USB port and install an ethernet card.

    Hi timswish
I too would recommend going the ethernet card route.

    Ethernet better?

Is there any advantage to switching to ethernet over USB if my USB is functioning correctly?
My ISP had a link to New USB drivers for my modem... So I got them before I installed XP...

Unless you are a true, confirmed, hard-core tinkerer. In that case, the motto is:

"If it ain't broke, tweak it to work better/faster ". If you break it while tweaking, consider the repair time as a meaningful learning experience ".

USB for modems (cable or DSL)

Most people will not see the performance hit - but if you were to pop a pII 233 into your 800MHz system then run benchmarks on USB vrs ethernet - you would see the difference.

For every USB device attached you are accepting a performance hit.

Windows runs through a continuous loop of polling devices & services. The total time it takes to make one complete pass with no USB items attached is much quicker than with USB attached.

This is simular to the old modems with a REAL UART vsrs a software modem.

    Are you using a router?
I have Windows XP pro and have used it with Road Runner for about six months.
Last week I installed a router to put another computer using W 2000 Pro on line.
Now every time I walk away for a few hours I lose my intenret connection on one of the computers (the one with XP).
    I haven't found an answer.
Oh yes, I am using ethernet cards on both computers.

    DHCP & DNS

I had a similar problem. A work around is to restart the DHCP service and sometimes the DNS service. I wrote a bat file that does it quickly.

    Not on the router

Run it on the PC. Just open Notepad and add the following to a new text file...

    net stop dhcp

    net start dhcp

Save it then rename it to somthing.bat
When you double click it it will stop your DHCP service then restart it. The network (internet) should come back in 5 to 10 seconds.

    Good luck

    BroadBand Router drops connection

Re dropping any BroadBand connection when using a router:
We have had similiar probs w/ several routers. Check the timeout and connect on demand settings in the firmware. Most routers should have timeout=0 and connect on demand = no. The Xsense routers require a firmware update to stay online. The SMC Baricade , GigaHZ Palm, Kingston, XYtel and Seimens seem to stay on without updates.

We had similar connectivity problems, mostly with the cable company. We solved most issues by installing a Netgear router as a firewall. It keeps the system connected. Further, we were having problems with people penetrating the firewalls on the cable system (changeover from ATT to Charter). This way, no one can find the individual computers.

    Routers

IMHO - A Hardware router (with NAT) is a firewall.

A "software" firewall is a game of smoke and mirrors...

The IP address problem is a known issue with XP. Microsoft has a temporary patch, but you must contact them to get it. If the problem is livable, they recommend you waite for a formal release in the next service pack. For information check:
