I have recently installed Windows XP Home. Now I find I cannot access drive a: (floppy disk). Obviously the fault lies with something I have done as I did not have the problem initially. Any advice as to how to rectify things and let me access my floppy drive would be most welcome.

Assuming nothing has changed in your BIOS and it's set to recognise a Floppy, go into the device mngr and see what the status is under Floppy Disk Drives. You may want to check and reseat the Floppy drive cable to the drive and the other end to the motherboard and then ask windows to detect any new hardware. Possibly deleting any current Floppy drive listed in the device mngr first.

I know it may sound stupid but have you tried another floppy. Do you have another one that you can try?

Sorry...I should have said floppy drive.

    Hi Dobhar
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I do not have another floppy drive I can try but you have made me think. I have been attributing the problem to software but I now believe I might have a faulty drive.#

    Thanks

    Jim

Thanks, Paul. The device manager shows a problem with the floppy drive. Before attempting the remedies suggested by you, I'll get back to the manufacturer as the computer is only weeks old.

jwpollock - while you can certainly get the mfgr to make good on a system that new, the problem is very likely a poorly seated cable and the "fix" will only take about 5 minutes to try so lots faster than messing about with sending it back for repair or something.

Might be well worth the time to power down, remove case, remove and reseat cable. If that doesn't take care of it you may well have a faulty drive but the cable thing is by far the most common cause of the problem.

    Hi Newt

Thanks for your reply. The manufacturers have agreed a probable faulty drive. As I have a 2 year onsite repair warranty, I'll let them do the work.

    Thanks again

    Jim
