I'm looking for a code for Hot Keys to provide quicker access to 1/3 and 2/3,
all the ANSI codes I can find seem to be lacking those two hot keys. They have 1/4 1/2 and 3/4 but no other fractions.

    Hi Ricky

Check out Character Map - Programs > Accessories > System Tools - if you don't have it load through Add/Remove Programs > Windows components.

Under Arial - have not looked further ....

    one third - U+2153
    two thirds - U+2154

    eighths are there too.

Thanx Pete. I fouind what you made reference to, but now question is, how to make them work.

U+2153 for example - how to make that into 1/3

RickyD2--I am looking forward to PeteC's answer, too. I do not know how to use Unicode either.
The way I use Character Map when it gives me a "U+xxxx" code is to click on the symbol desired, Select, Copy and then Paste into the document where I want it. Examples Ą Ć ⅔
If Character Map shows "Alt+xxxx" for a symbol you can again use the above procedure, but you can also hold down Alt and click the four number code using the keypad at the right of the Keyboard. (The numbers in the top row will not work. And you have to have NUMLOCK on.)

Well, shoot. I saw the copy and select but never dreamed about using them the way you describe.

I did note, however, that when you clicked on a symbol or whatever, if it has an ANSI code equivalent, that ANSI code will show on the lower right side of the pane.

    Me too :D

This is a right PITA - where there is an Alt key combination quoted there is no problem, but where ther is a U key combination all I can get is a little code box in a Word document.

However, in Word, but not in Excel, if you go Insert > Symbol a somewhat different version of the Character Map pops up. Highlighting a symbol - 1/3 for example gives a shortcut key sequence....

    2153, Alt+X

Type in 2153 using the number pad and this appears in the document - then hit Alt+X and the numbers change to 1/3.

Much easier to double click on 1/3 in the Character Map and it is automatically inserted. This also works in Excel.

This thing is nuitso. Following Pete C's lead, I went to Word>Insert>Symbol
and the character Map indeed does appear. Going there twice, I got two different sets of fonts. Thanks Pete C.

Using Ariel or Paladino Linotype, I find I can click on the 1/3 and then click on insert and the 1/3 will appear in the document, however, using 2153 then Alt+X nothing happens except the 2153 stays where I typed it.

I'm using Word 2000, I suppose the version of Word could make a difference.

    Comments?

There may be differences between Word 2000 and Word 2003 which I am using. Character map seems to default to 'normal' text - whatever that is, maybe the chosen font for the document - each time it is opened.

Just found that the number keys above the letter keys work without the need to use the number pad. Being left handed and a one/two finger typist I never use the block of keys to the right.

    PeteC--
Presume you mean in Word. Does not work for me in Post Reply here or in Notepad/Wordpad.
