    Missing COM port

    Thanks Mattman,
I'll have a look at the drivers disk which came with the motherboard and processor.
Rather not talk to my ISP, my french isn't that good!

The modem is and 'Ovislink' OF-56C. 56K Faxmodem with 'Connexant' single chipset with (get this)'thunder resistance technology' - I wish!

Will let you know if re-installing chipset drivers fixes the problem.

Did you find the drivers disk for the computer and install the chipset drivers? This is the first priority, because all the other drivers might not install correctly.
Everest in my signature should tell you in the Computer -> System summary section, but if you don't have the correct drivers installed, the information may not be complete. Windows XP has full sets of some chipset drivers on the CD, like Intel and VIA chipsets, any that are not on the Windows CD you will need to get from the computer's drivers disk or from the computer/motherboard manufacturer's website.

You can get "generic" Conexant drivers here:
    http://www.conexant.com/support/md_driverassistance.html
It should be either a HCF or HSF type. It will tell you in the modem diagnostics section you saw before. You will need to remove any previous modem drivers. First look in Add/Remove Programs and find any programs that relate to a modem and uninstall them. After that, check in Modems section of Control Panel that all modems have been removed. You can then run the Conexant drivers installation. If all goes well, reboot before trying to connect to the internet. If Windows wants to install a "Voice Modem" or "Fax Modem" when you reboot, get it to seach on the OF-56C drivers disk (these are specific for the model).

If you still have trouble, consider contacting the ISP's Helpdesk and asking if there is someone that can speak English (you could be lucky) or, do you have a friend that speaks French and could run through it with them.
Another might be to look at the ISP's website, they should have a setup procedure there.

Try cross-checking all the settings in Control Panel internet settings between the desktop and the laptop. Look in Internet Properties (especially the Connections tab and it's LAN settings button), Network Connections and Phone & Modem Options. You will need to click all the settings and properties buttons. I don't have a modem on my Win XP machine, so I cannot guide you much.

    Luck
    Matt

Thanks Matt. I have just downloaded the latest driver from the Ovistel website but doesn't solve the problem.
If it is any help, I listened in to the modem dialling my ISP and it seems, from the sound, that it is still trying to upload data whilst the ISP is trying to verify name and password. My previous modem went quiet whilst waiting for ident. veritfication.
Still looking for the Motherboard drivers disk, when I find it, I'll re-install.

Hi Mattman - Found the original drivers disk, reloaded all the original drivers and - hey Presto, I'm up and running and talking to you via my new connection.
Just like to say thank you very much personally to you in particular and all your buddies who make WBBS the computer equivalent of 911 (or 999 if you go to the UK).
If any of you guys are ever in my neck of the woods drop in for an 'aperitif' or even a coffee.
You're doing a great job there.

Gee, that's a relief. We could have been searching in other areas for a long time. Thanks for letting us know.
