    more info

After I copied and pasted the screen in my last post (the last one, the result from TESTDISK), I just left the program running, minimized the window, and went about my business waiting for a response. After your response I went back to the window and hit enter. This offered me a choice to do a deeper scan, which I did. This is the result:

TestDisk 6.4, Data Recovery Utility, June 2006
    Christophe GRENIER <grenier@cgsecurity.org>
    http://www.cgsecurity.org

    Disk /dev/sdb - 80 GB / 74 GiB - CHS 9729 255 63
Partition Start End Size in sectors
    * HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 9728 254 63 156296322

Structure: Ok. Use Up/Down Arrow keys to select partition.
Use Left/Right Arrow keys to CHANGE partition characteristics:
    *=Primary bootable P=Primary L=Logical E=Extended D=Deleted
Keys A: add partition, L: load backup, T: change type, P: list files,
    Enter: to continue
NTFS found using backup sector!, 80 GB / 74 GiB

I notice there is only one partition listing here, and I see the comment at the bottom "NTFS found using backup sector!, 80 GB / 74 GiB "

Does this tell you anything else? I then entered "P" for list files, and this is what I got:

It looks like my folders are still there, is there anyway to recover this? What is the best way?

Due to not wanting to mess up my hdd, I can only make an educated guess on some of the steps required.

After the deep search and it shows partition , use the left/right arrow key to change the very left "D" to "*" . "*" = bootable partition--press enter--select (WRITE) and enter- "Write partition table confirm " YES- next is to press quit and exit program. It should now work. Good Luck.

    Success, mostly

Sorry for the delayed response, I hope I'm not forgotten. I'm a Locomotive Engineer by trade, and I have been on the road for the last few days. Back home now, catching up.

Anyway, for the benefit of anyone reading this thread because you have a simular problem, here's what I did:

I ran TESTDISK and did an "analyse ". Then it said nothing found, and the menu at the bottom offered a deeper scan. I did that and it found a partition. The partition already showed a "* ", so I tried changing it to a "P ", for Primary (vs. "*" for Primary Bootable) thinking that maybe it didn't like being bootable. After I saved that change, TESTDISK told me that the partition didn't match the backup partition and did I want to fix it. I restored the backup, rebooted and that made the disk readable in windows XP!!!!! All except for one directory that is! All of the others are available, but one. When I double click on it, Windows tells me "Access Denied ". If I do a view in TESTDISK, it can see the sub dir's, and the files, so I know they are still there. Any thoughts as to why XP won't let me in? I checked the properties and is doesn't show it compressed or encrypted. I can't even remember if I did encrypt it, I may have.

TopFarmer, or anyone else, any software you are aware of that can tell me what may be going on with this folder?

P.S To TopFarmer, thanks so much for your help, couldn't have done it with out your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you ever get to the Denver area, let me know, I owe you dinner!!!!
