Multiple BSOD IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL crashes

Hello,

I am having problems with (What seems like) multiple programs causing IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL "blue screens" a day. Affected programs include:
>Mozilla FireFox (When Closing)
>AVG Free Edition Antivirus (When Updating)
>and random crashes when restarting/turning off the computer (esp. after installing something that reqired a reboot)

I understand the memory dumps generated by these errors are difficult to read even by highly experienced technicians, so I'll try to be patient on this.

I will post them individually as each error appears (after the current one has been dealt with, of course) as to not throw too much out at you at once.

I have:
>Windows XP Home edition SP2 (Recently Updated--but after these problems started--)
>256MB of RAM*
>Nvidia GeForce4 MX 420 Graphics card (Recently updated, same as above)
>CPU&Sound Card are unknown at this point. The Computer is a Dell Dim. 8250 Desktop.
*Keep in mind that I haven't run the memory test on it yet...I'll get back to you on that.

Okay, Thanks for the tip.

I have here the debuglog file generated by the debugwiz program. (Upon reading other posts, I have cut off the "unloaded modules" section, which was said to be uneccesary...If you need to see that too for some reason I'll post that too later.)

Still having problems with the debug complaining about symbols not being found. I don't know if that really means much here though.

Tried That.

I Updated AVG two days ago (After the problem had started) And looked again today, but there were no new updates. The System is still crashing occaisionally.

It crashed last yesterday when I closed FireFox after having it (the browser) on for over an hour. Every time this happens, I lose my Bookmarks, Search Engines, and form data...Because of this I have a backup copy of the Mozilla folder in application data (C:\Documents and Settings\(User)\Application Data) to unzip and replace the corrupted one after this happens. It gets a little annoying after awhile...

The Error that was generated had the same codes (0x8066100f, etc.) as the one above...If you need to see the debuglog file for that one too I can post it as well.

I quoted snippets of your BSOD dump analysis with boldface/color emphasis added for the parts I think may be relevant.

While I don't claim to be an expert regarding BSOD dump analysis, according to this 4-page article, Network World: "How to solve Windows system crashes in minutes" (specifically the last paragraph of page 3), it appears your BSOD problem may be caused by xpacket.sys.

Perhaps you should consider figuring out what you have in your computer that uses xpacket.sys and try disabling or uninstalling it.

I Googled xpacket.sys and came up with relatively few results compared to what I usually get when Googling a filename.

It seems a personal firewall called Filseclab Personal Firewall Standard Edition v2.5 uses a file named xpacket.sys. Their source code "for sale" information page specifically mentions XPACKET.SYS (NDIS HOOK for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003) and XFILTER.DLL (SPI). Both of these filenames are displayed in your BSOD dump analysis snippets I quoted above.

If you have Filseclab Personal Firewall installed, you might want to consider disabling or uninstalling it to see if that clears up your BSOD issue.

Elsewhere, I read a reference to "xfilter personal firewall utility" possibly involving xpacket.sys and system crashes so maybe you have an "xfilter" firewall installed that is causing your BSODs. I Googled "xfilter personal firewall " (including the quotes) and found links only to web pages that appear to be located in China and/or in Chinese(?) language.

If you decide to disable/uninstall a firewall, I recommend you first disconnect from the Internet. Then disable/uninstall the firewall and enable another firewall (such as Windows XP's firewall) before connecting to the Internet.

You should have no more than one software firewall running at any time. If you run two or more software firewalls concurrently, that can create problems because the software firewalls tend to "fight" each other for control of network traffic.

 

Okay, while trying to delete Filseclab firewall from my system, I learned that the "XFilter" firewall was in fact another name for the Filseclab software. It and the other files mentioned in the dump (Xpacket, etc.) were linked to (if not part of) the Filseclab firewall.
Upon thinking about it a little more, the problems didn't even start until I had it installed in the firstplace (Originally to cover for my malfunctioning Windows Firewall. It is now working fine, and I have no Idea why it stopped working in the first place...) So it is now off of my system and I am waiting to see if it will crash again.
--So far it has run smoothly for more than 12 hours and things are looking good.

I originally had an Idea that it might have been the problem too, but when I uninstalled it before (while still connected to the internet like an idiot ) It destroyed my broadband connection (reducing it down to a useless 12 kbps). I used system restore to undo the uninstallation and decided to try other things. I changed some of the settings on the firewall and the BSOD's seemed to slow down, but did not stop, So I dismissed it as the cause, blaming FireFox and AVG, the programs that the computer crashed on when i tried to close them, with something to do with this.

Not to count my chickens before they hatch, but thanks for the tip. It seems to have taken care of my problem I will, of course come back and tell you if it has or hasn't completely fixed my problem in a few days, to give it some time...

I'm glad it seems your BSOD issue might be nailed down! I crossed my fingers for ya and I'll be wishing the best for you over the next few days.

I can understand the mistake of not disconnecting the from the Internet first. Frustration can sometimes cloud judgement. That sudden decrease in online performance may have simply been the result of several Internet computers discovering and trying to connect to your unshielded computer at the same time, therefore eating up a lot of your bandwidth. It seems once they discover an exposed machine, especially a braoadband-connected machine, they would try to exploit potential weaknesses more aggressively.

I'm glad your Windows XP firewall appears to be functioning correctly now. However, Windows XP's firewall reportedly monitors only incoming traffic. If you are unlucky enough to have malware running on your computer that tries to create outgoing traffic, such as "phoning home" in some way, then Windows XP's firewall will allow that traffic to pass without alerting you first.

Therefore, once you feel confident your BSOD issue is resolved, I suggest you create a new System Restore point. Then download and install a firewall (that you can use instead of the Windows XP firewall) that monitors both incoming and outgoing traffic. There are several firewalls (shareware and freeware) available via Major Geeks.

Here's some biased information:

One firewall I have used that works pretty well for monitoring both incoming and outgoing traffic is ZoneAlarm Free ( "Basic ") by Zone Labs. It's FREE for personal/non-commercial use and it's fairly easy to set up. (I currently use the "Pro" version because I like tinkering with extra features.) Steve Gibson, a computer security enthusiast at grc.com, has recommended ZoneAlarm for years.

Hers's a direct link to the "ZoneAlarm Free" ( "Basic ") version 6.5.731.000 self-extracting installer. Download/Save it to a folder on your hard drive and then run it to proceed with installation.

If you want to test a firewall's ability to filter outbound traffic, you can use Steve Gibson's "LeakTest ". Here's a link to instructions for using LeakTest.

The LeakTest page also includes some of Steve Gibson's comments about ZoneAlarm. His published comments might be a bit outdated though. Some other firewall producers may have improved their products (or produced new, comparable firewalls) since Mr. Gibson published his comments.

You can use Mr. Gibson's "Shields UP!!" to test how well your computer is hidden/shielded from unsolicited incoming Internet traffic.

Good News.

The Firewall I was using before seems to have been the prolem. I took mailman's advice and got ZoneAlarm and every thing has been fine since.
