Hi, my widows xp home taskbar and all desktop icons are gone. The desktop background pic is intact. I can run some programs through the Task Manager by clicking on File, new task, browse. My son has been playing games and has recently dowloaded Limewire. I wonder if registry is corrupted. I tried a windows repair but it did not work.

DRMANMIT - Welcome to the Board :)

Please be patient - we are all volunteers here and are in many different parts of the world so there are time differences to consider and it is totally unreasonable to expect an instant reply (within 1 1/2 hours) - although your thread has had 31 views to date clearly no one who has read the thread has an answer for you.

    I have a number of suggestions ....

Open Task Manager and start explorer.exe - File > New Task and type in explorer.exe - does this restore the desktop?

If it does run System File Checker go to Start > Run > type in sfc /scannow - note the space before the forward slash. Have your XP CD handy.

If the desktop was not restored run from a command prompt ....

Task Manager > File > New Task and type in cmd > OK

In the command window which opens change to the C:\ drive and type in sfc /scannow > enter

If running sfc does not resolve your problem I suspect that the download of Limewire and any subsequent activity in that program has brought in some uninvited guests in the form of malware.

Post back on the other solutions first.

While theres malware mentioned in here, what is it exactly?

    Also heres a solution

Press the "windows" key on your keyboard (marked by the sort of windows flag) then click control panel (may need to use your arrow keys to navigate yourself to it) then click "Tastbar and start menu" and make sure the tick box next to automaticaly hide task bar isnt clicked.
