I have ben trying to copy audio tape to my computer by connecting the headphone socket to the line in socket on my sound card. The sound comes through ok to the computer speakers but is accompanied by a screaming howl. Can anyone suggest a solution or a better way please?

I have a cable w/ adapter I got at Radio Shack long ago. It has rca jacks that connect to the "lines out" from a cassette deck and the other end is one single jack that fits into the line in port on sound card. Works well with Sound Recorder or Audacity. Using headphone from a tape reciorder can result in poor quality sound.
