I have two machines running WinXPHome and had file sharing working fine. Just recently I'm unable to see the shared folders on one of the machines. From that machine I can see the shared folders on ther other, but not the other way around. Printer sharing still functions fine. No changes were made to settings in either machine (that I'm aware of).

Any ideas as to what happened?

    Thanks.

Although you didn't say what kind of a network it is, I suppose it doesn't really matter. I have a wireless network and sometimes things go berserk. The first thing I do is reboot both machines. The second thing I do is re-establish the sharing properties of the folder:
    >My Computer
    >Navigate to where your folder is
    >Right click the file and select properties and then the sharing tab
    >Uncheck your present share and click "apply "
    >Check your sharing properties and click "OK ".

So in essence you are unchecking the sharing properties of the folder and then rechecking it. From what I have discovered, sometimes Windows gets a little confused and needs to set things back up again. Especially if some system settings have been changed. But just because you didn't do anything doesn't mean Windows Update didn't.
Try that and see if it works, I have some other fixes if that doesn't.

I myself gave up on sharing years ago and made each machine a 100% standalone unit. .

I installed a Router and later bought an HO 5850 printer that plugs directly into it. It has been well worth it. I can be doing something on my machine and others can do things on the other machines at the same time. Even be on the Internent. My Wife and I also enjoy playing games between machines.

And doing some things ( such setting up the Printer ) I make sure the other two machines are powered off. This helps to assure that they do not get invloved.

I just looked and one machine is playng online games and the other is playing onboard games ( Grandkids ) And of courses I am on here.

OOPS !! Being called. Something is wrong. Or someone can't find something.

    OOPSS !!!

Something that I forgot. ( alias-I have messed up )

If you do indeed install a network printer make sure it is on at all times. I forgot and fed it from the same PS as my machine and then shut mine down.

OOPSS !!! I then powered it from the same source as the Router & Modem which of course also need to be left on at all times.. No problems since.
