had a infection on my daughter's laptop that i think by using the instructions in 3-4 different threads, recovery console and qoofix have succeeded in removing the junk. I am posting HJT.log, EWIDO and Combo for review to see if there is anything else she went to/on/etc she shouldn't have. I am using her computer to send this. I do know i know i have several windows files to reinstall. Which ones would be a help!
    Thanks

Hi and welcome to WindowsBBS forums.

You got some mess there no doubt. There is a chance your box has been root kited based on what you have presented so far. Lots of odd looking things which generally indicate the presence of a root kit.

Do you by chance have the log generated by Ewido and maybe the Qoofix or any other scans? This may help narrow things down some.

For now, lets get a couple of other deep scans.

    Please download SilentRunners from here

Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop.

Please post the entire contents of this logfile created back into this thread for me to see.

Then Please generate a startup list using HJT. And please check the 2 boxes next to the 'Generate Startuplist' button:
    List also minor sections (full)
    List empty sections (complete)

Post both of those back here and we'll see what they show us. It's likely we will run some rootkit scanners as well, we'll see.

I do confess to manually editing the registry to get this dell to boot but I did save the registry before doing anything. I then identified any file in the windows and root directories through the recovery counsel that were created after 5-15-06 and deleted them since my daughter stated she started having problems around that time (of course she didn't tell dad she was having problems until this thing crashed). I do know that I do not want to use it in its entirety due to the infections that were present. I am very comfortable modifying the registry if required

OK, lets give this a whirl and see how we do.

Some of this below will be based off of the original HJT logfile, unsure how much reg hacking you have done thus far, so bear with me.

Below you will find my results and recommendations. Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE proceeding.

Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It also needs to be removed from the desktop.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe)Move HijackThis.exe into this folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Go to: Start > Run > type " services.msc ", then click OK

Scroll down to the WTime service.

Click it to highlight it, then <right-click> and select: Properties
Select and set "Service Status" option to "Stop"
Select: "Startup type" and set it to "Disabled ", click Apply, then OK.

While in the services, look up the following ones and if found, do the same as instructed above:
Print Spooler Service<<<---*Note the name, there is a legit Print Spooler, we're looking for the Print Spooler service
    Time Service

Please go to Add/Remove, and if found, uninstall the following:
    Windows <<<obviously notthe OS
    TClock

Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TClock.exe] C:\Program Files\TClock\tclock_install.exe

    O23 - Service: Print Spooler Service (SpoolSvc203) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nlkfev7exne.exe (file missing)

O23 - Service: Time Service (Time) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dior4f4gbwnewofas.exe (file missing)

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
    Click Start.
    Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

And search for, then delete, if found, (some may not be present after previous steps) the following files/folders:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\nlkfev7exne.exe <<<--file
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dior4f4gbwnewofas.exe <<<--file
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\timedrv26.sys <<<--file
    C:\Program Files\Online Services<<<<---folder
    C:\Program Files\Windows Plus<<<<---folder
    C:\Program Files\Windows<<<<---folder
    C:\Program Files\TClock<<<<---folder

To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.

Now lets run some rootkit detectors

Please run a GMER Rootkit scan:

    Download GMER's application from here

Unzip it and start the GMER.exe
Click the Rootkit tab and click the Scan button.

Once done, click the Copy button.
This will copy the results to your clipboard.
Paste the results in your next reply.

Warning ! Please, do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.

If you're having problems with running GMER.exe, try it in safe mode.
This tools works in safe mode. Other rootkitrevealers don't.

    Please download RootKitRevealer from here

Unzip it to the desktop, run it, and click Scan. This will generate a log file; please post the entire log file back into this thread for me to view.

Then post a new HJT log back into this thread please along with the other logs.

ok - You were correct in the comment about the registry hack - had only to update quickbooks to get it to run again. I have not tried her IPOD/Itune downlaod software yet but it does play.....

Print spooler is the correct one for the nlkfev7...., the wtime is actually "time service" running dior4f4gbw.....exe in services.msc. both have been disabled, (but i did have to be in safe mode for time services to disable it). In add/remove programs, tclock and windows do not exist. I believe i hacked those out earlier.... There is a windows installer 3.1 (kb893803) listed. Did not uninstall this since it is on my other 6 xp systems.

Ran hjt - found the timeclock and dior4, not the nlkfev entry. Checked the two found, ran HJT, dior4 istill there.....

Booted in safe mode, searched for these:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\nlkfev7exne.exe <<<--file (not found,previously deleted)
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dior4f4gbwnewofas.exe <<<--file (not found,previously deleted)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\timedrv26.sys <<<--file (found in quarantined trendmicro file, deleted)
    C:\Program Files\Online Services<<<<---folder (found, deleted)
    C:\Program Files\Windows Plus<<<<---folder (found, deleted)
    C:\Program Files\Windows<<<<---folder (found, deleted)
C:\Program Files\TClock<<<<---folder (not found, previously deleted)

Ran Services.msc again, found time services in auto again, disabled.
Ran HJT again, got rid of the DIOR4 while in safe mode.

rebooted into normal mode. RAn HJT with log. I will finish in another post from that computer the results of HJT log and the two root scanners.

Do you want the HJT log with minor sections and empty sections. The log posted was from normal boot before running both rootkits.

Actually, I just want the regular standard HJT scan, but in normal mode, not the start up list.

Well everything looks fine far as I can tell, tho you likely did most of the work, :p

We have 3 more things to do, to help ensure you have removed all the little 'leftovers' which may be hiding:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.
    Index.dat Suite

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion.

Here is a link which describes how security apps work with WIN XP machines.
XP User Accts Security Apps Operation

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

    SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol v10.0.1.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

Links for tutorials for all the apps I mentioned can be found on my site as well.

Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:
