    Hi All,
    Recently I installed a critical security update KB914388 on my Windows XP Pro SP2 computer. When I examined the log for this installation there were 15 lines of the same info.

    "Setup encountered an error: The update. ver file is not correct"
    This prompted me to examine the logs for other security updates: KB904706, KB908519, KB911562; all had the same setup error information in log files. Alternately, one, KB896423 had no log.

    My computer had been performing great and I see no bad effects of these recent installations. But I'm a little nervous and wonder if I should remove these updates. Any suggestions?

    Hi derfsch!

    Did you install the update(s) through;

    - Automatic Updates;

    - Windows Update or

    - Microsoft Download to local hard disk and installed from there?

    I went google on "Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct" and found a few results, one of which is http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/browse_thread/thread/5f9ded71f47d76d0/fa5edab9365ddfaa?lnk=st&q=&rnum=1&hl=sv#fa5edab9365ddfaa

    It contains a KB******.log with a similar error message and an MVP states that there is "Nothing unusual in the KB logs ".

    Are the updates listed in Add/Remove programs?

    If you want to delve deeper into the innards of Windows Update, have a read in The Package Installer (Formerly Called Update.exe) for Microsoft Windows Operating Systems and Windows Components!

    In C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB914388\update I have the file update.ver and it looks like this in Notepad:

    Do you have that file? Is it the same?

    To answer your questions: I used the Microsoft Download Center and clicked on the Download button. This produced a Setup program and from there I installed the updates to my hard drive. All these updates are available in the Add/Remove section.

    I also have the C:\Windows\$hf_mig$\KB914388\Update\update.ver file, but it does not match yours. I'll only show a few points:
    update.ver
    [SourceFileInfo]
    splqfe\6to4svc.dll=1AF551.......... the first two lines
    splqfe\dhcpcsvcdll=662D23.........
    .
    .
    .
    sp2qfe\iphlpapi.dll=07F4744........ the last line.

    I'm not sure what this means but Thank You for your interest.

    derfsch,
    neither am I sure what it means and to be honest ... :eek: ... I haven't got a clue.

    Unless someone else chips in with some info, since you have no problems and the updates are listed in Add/Remove programs I wouldn't worry about it.

    I always download the updates to the local hard disk and install from there, disconnected from the internet. In my logs, there are a lot of "failures" but I believe that may be due to not being connected to the internet. A few examples from the KB914388.log:

    2.694: DoInstallation: FetchSourceURL for d:\9ff358b5b08d7884fd33856885f09406\update\update_SP2GDR.inf failed

    (d:\9ff358b5b08d7884fd33856885f09406\ is the temporary folder into which the update was extracted when being installed. That is automated as is the deletion of that folder when the installation is complete.)

    2.704: LoadFileQueues: UpdSpGetSourceFileLocation for halacpi.dll failed: 0xe0000102

    I haven't viewed the *.log files until now and didn't know about the failures. The installation itself didn't return an error message. It seems and probably is OK.
