While trying to connect to the Internet with I.E. 6.0, My ZoneAlarm
is asking me to allow Services & Controller Application for connection to the Internet.
If I say no, I can't connect, yes, I can connect.
Does anybody know what this is (Services & Controller)? ZA does
not give me adequate info on this subject.
It seems like this has just cropped up since I installed service pack
    2 for win2000pro last week.
    Thanks for your time,

    tiple:confused:

Sorry, if I'm in the wrong thread

This application is listed as services.exe in the task manager and enables the following services - alerter, dmserver, eventlog, lanmanserver, lanmanworkstation, lmhosts, seclogon, W32Time, wmi, dnscache, and a few others too.

Dnscache is responsible for resolving domains to IP's and this is why you are unable to access the internet when this service is blocked.

Some people advocate unloading unnecessary services or (to free resources) or limiting which services are given access (as a security measure) but I'd suggest that you leave well alone and allow access for the whole caboodle (if you'll forgive the use of such confusing techincal jargon ;)).

If you do want to dabble with the above, post back and I'll provide a link or two.

    Hey! Bret

Yes, please provide me the additional links.

    I just went to www.jasons-toolbox.com/cookiejar.asp.
This was a link provided by a reply to another of my post here.
As soon as I got to jasons-toolbox.com, ZA popped up asking me
for permission to allow Services & Controller App.
I'm allready on line and this Ser/Contrl permission is driving me crazy.

    Thanks again,

    tiple:(
