I have been reading the posts about the dreaded red X, but have not found the answer to my problem. I received an email with several pictures in it. I wanted only one of the pictures so I selected it, pasted in in a new message and sent it to myself.
The message and picture arrived in good condition. I looked at it and closed the message so I could show it to my wife later in the evening.
When I opened the email for her, all that was there was the text and the dreaded red X. No Picture. So I went to the "sent mail" folder to see it there. Same problem. Only the text and a red X. Right clicking on the red X offered no options except to "select. "
What happened to the pictures? They were there earlier.
All I had done was turn the computer off and back on when my wife came home several hours later.
Any help would be appreciated. I have searched Microsoft Knowledge bases and they offer no answer either.
Next time I will save the picture to a file instead of mailing it to myself. I would have done that this time, but when I sent it and opened the mail when it arrived, everything was still there.
P.S. Pictures on internet pages are still showing as before.

    Thanks.

WayneH had sent me a PM about the above and I had replied as follows--while suggesting he also post here (which I am pleased to see has been done.)
"Since you say you saw the images OK when you first received them in an email to yourself, my first reaction to the problem is that you should right click on the RedX and then Show Picture.

It is a little mysterious that the email you sent yourself showed the image correctly in the first place. Do a right click on the RedX|Properties to see what is in the Address line. Copy that, Paste into IE's Address bar|Enter.

If that does not work, do you know the source of the image? Was it a link to an image stored on a website or an attachment to the original email? If it is a link, it is possible the site from which the picture was originally downloaded is temporarily down and so now you cannot access the image. A link to a site that is down will not work until the site is back up.

If you can still access the original email and show the image to your wife from there, and the problem is not repetitive, maybe forget trying to find a general fix. If the original email no longer has the images, that suggests a down-site problem ( as described above) over which you have no control. "

To this I can add that if his email source has a website, that he go there and retrieve the message there hopefully with images. Or ask that the email be resent.

It is not clear what WayneH did with the original suggestions.

    Re: OE & Red X

I tried all of the suggestions that Welshjim offered, but could not resolve the problem. I don't know where the picture originally came from, but probably from a wesite somewhere. Right clicking on the red X offered nothing but, "select all" and that only showed the text. All other options including "show picture" were grayed out.

I thought it would be safely kept after I sent it to myself and viewed it. It was still there to view when not connected to the internet, so I figured it was in a file with my email system. If I could remember who sent it, I would have them send it again, but at this time it has been deleted.
It's not that importamt right now, but I just wanted to find out why it happened so I can avoid the problem again.
    Thank for you help.

Do the following while in Outlook Express:
    >Tools
    >Options
    >Click on the Security Tab
    >Under "Download Images ", uncheck the box for "Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail ".

Also under "Virus Protection" in the Security zone, move the option to Internet Zone instead of Restricted sites zone. Make sure you have a good anti virus though to check all your incoming e-mail.

Skipslot--Those are all good suggestions, but as I said earlier
That is why I focussed on a possible problem with the source of the image.
I guess we will just have to wait and see. Perhaps a setting got changed accidently in between the first and subsequent viewings of the email.

The reason I suggested that was because with some of the recent Windows Updates some of these settings have been reset to default. It doesn't happen in every computer however, but it is worth a try non the less.

    Skipslot.
I have checked those settings and they are already set as you suggested.
I have what I consider a good anti-virus program. (Avast) At least it stops the viruses.
Thanks to all who are trying to figure this out.

The only other item I can think of right off hand is maybe an Internet Explorer setting is transposing into Outlook Express. This would be in the Tools dropdown in IE, then Advanced and under MultiMedia make sure Show Pictures is checked.

    Re: OE and Red X

"Show pictures" is checked as well as all other boxes under "Multimedia. "

This one is tough. Thanks again to all.

WayneH--Is this a repetitive problem or just that one image? To reinstall XP is fairly drastic for one picture.

Did someone post something that is hidden to me? I posted one that was to reinstall OE and/or repair it. Not XP. But it depends on how important it is and if someone else has a solution.

I see, I thought it to be the link that actually told how to repair it. Control panel>Internet Explorer>and then choice repair from the resulting choose. The title is rather misleading.

Skipslot--If you were running Win98 and ME that would be the way. Somewhere after ME, MS changed the IE/OE repair procedure.
This MSKB article implies it was determined by the version of IE you had installed.
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194177&sd=RMVP
I am not sure, now, whether it is determined by the version of IE or Windows. Certainly most installations of XP would install IE6 by default. So maybe it does not matter much which is right.

They just recently changed that, the Microsoft link was just changed July 18, 2006. So now I take it that if IE fails in some way, there is no way to repair it. A big disappointment for all those people having IE problems currently. I just checked both my computers, no way to repair the installation through control panel.
The only item available looks like it might be a utility that repairs Internet Explorer by registering it's core DLL files and reinstalls using the IE.INF file.

Skipslot--I keep hoping someone with XP SP2 will try the XP SP1 fixes just to see what happens.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/
    And report back.
I have a hard time believing any damage will be done. Whether it will fix anything is another issue.

skipslot--5starsupport.com seems to be a mix of suggestions for Win98 and WinXP. http://www.5starsupport.com/oe-faq/1-12.htm#1-12, for example is definitely for Win98 (possibly WinME, too). As discussed, there is no Repair IE option in Win XP's Add/Remove.

Just trying to point the person in a direction that maybe after investigation into various solutions could find it themselves because not many are posting here.
