    Hello

A My sister had a pirated version of windows xp pro. She went and purchased an upgrade from local computer dealer. I followed the KB artical on changing the registration key, rebooted. then it said it was activated. I then had her try to do the windows update and it still says that it is a pirated edition. How can I get around that without re-installing the os so we can keep the updated coming in. Thanks

    Thanks

graved--Your sister probably has wasted money on the Upgrade. Using an Upgrade implies that you have a valid copy of Windows to upgrade.
I suspect she will need to install XP from a valid full (not upgrade) WinXP CD to replace the pirated XP. Perhaps OEM will do.

    upgrade Copy

Actually she was a register owner of win 98 so the upgrade should be fine.

graved--I suspect it will be necessary to uninstall XP and revert to Win98 before retrying the Upgrade. Unless what has been done since Win98 was installed has messed things up, it might be as simple as going to Control Panel|Add/Remove

    But other wise

Of course access to the Win98 Product Key will be needed.

    upgrades, etc

When installing XP using an upgrade, all you need is the original full 98, 98SE, or 2000 or ME disk. During the installation, it will ask you to verify the CD by inserting it. I have done clean installations this way, the preferred method. You don't need to have 98 installed.

With a full Windows XP, make sure you have the same version: Home or Professional.

If you have changed the key code, http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-1035_11-5034890.html#

and it still does not work, you can select the telephone option and actually call Microsoft and get it done. I have known at least one person who actually got this to work.

And, for future reference, one can install either an upgrade or a full version over a "dis-advantaged" version using a repair installation.

    ;)
