I had to reinstall win XP with the recovery disks (6 of them) when it was doing this one of the questions was if you want this computer to always be connected to the internet or do you want to require a password. Me  (I feel like a dummy now) chose to have it connected all the time. This is my question. I want to change the setting to require a password before it connects to the internet. I do not know where I can do this at. I do not want to dump my hard drive again and re load XP because I have Notron 2006 That I purchaced on line so I have no disk:rolleyes: (never again) and I do not have any instals on this computer left. Please can someone direct me in the correct direction?
    Thank you for your time!

    exdancer2 - Welcome to the Board :)

This applies to conventional dialup and DSL - no idea about cable.

Your ISP will always require your username and password before you can connect to the Internet ....

Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Highlight ISP > Settings

On the same page click 'Always dial my default connection' and whenever a connection is required - assuming you are not already connected the dialup connection box will pop up.

Or do I misunderstand what you are after?

    Hi again:)

Hi! Thank you for your time:)
ok I asked my hubby and he said in the begining of set up it askes for things like user name, computer name and password. He said later it asked him if the computer was to always be online or if we wanted to enter password every time to log on to the internet. We chose for it to always be on. So when I turn on my computer it automatically logs me on to the internet. Before I used to have to click on the SBC icon (i think it was an sbc icon) and I would get a window that said connect and I would click connect and it would connect. If I wanted to work off line I would click on the icon and it would say disconnect and I would click it and it would dissconnect. I need it do do that again. I have dsl. When I click tools, internet options, connections I get a screen that says to set up an internet connection click set up and there is a box to click set up and at the bottom there is a box that says lan settings.
Nothing says ISP or highlight ISP. Not even in the grayed out text on the page.
I want to switch from the computer automatically connecting me from the point I click my name on the screen to...
requiring me to click an icon to choose "connect" on a windows screen to connect. Am I making any sense? I am sorry this is so hard to describe.
you see what I am trying to do ultimately is reconnect my netgear router and it wants me do dissable the automatic internet log in . We had it working before when I had to click on an Icon to connect. now it does not want to install because we are connected. I tried to just temp. disconnect the lan by clicking disable and then trying to connect the router but it does not like it*sigh*. So I figure if I can get it back to the setting before I can connect the router.
I think it should be a simple fix if I only new the correct path to take... Thank you for your time:)

Yes - I understand exactly what you want to do :) It does not appear to be that simple. I could send you into the Registry to make some changes - which I am unwilling to do as I have no experience of these changes and am not 100% certain that they will do what you want.

I suggest you contact SBC - who appear to be AT&T now from a Google hit and ask them.

In the meantime I have edited your thread title to highlight your exact problem in the hope that some one else with more knowledge of this matter will drop in.

    Thank you!

Thank you for your help. I thought about contacting SBC but I made the choice in XP set up so I am not sure if they would help me? I will try and see what happens. But :) YES:) This is what I need to do ......unless you can give me advice on how to get that router to work without doing all that? It is Net Gear WGT624v2.
    Once again, thank you!

Actually I think the choice you made was promped by Compaq via their recovery diske - it is not a question asked during an install of XP from a full CD.

I am unable to assist with routers - I don't have one - sorry.

    hi again:)

Yes the 6 disk set I did order from compaq. Because the computer came with Win XP instaled. So They gave me the recovery CD's from my compaq model #. Do you think Compaq support might be able to help? I am so frustrated:mad: I almost want to just dump this and start over again and scrap NAV and just get a free one online but I loose my $ for the subscription.
Blaa! Thank you so much for your help.

Compaq support may be/should be able to help.

BTW - did you not download Norton to your drive as an installation file and install it from there? If you did burn it to CD.

    Ooohhhhh:)

Hi! So If I go to my computer,c drive, program files, norton, right click to send to DVD/CD-RW Drive(E:) then in E it gives the option to burn to cd. Is this right? Or do I take another path. Presario will charge for the support because I do not have warranty any more. If I could burn it I would just do this over and chose the right option. Thank you!:D

No - you cannot do that as many of the program's files are installed within various folders in Windows.

My question was based on a normal download where you have the option to Run or Save. If you Save to the hard drive you can Run (install) the program whenever you want. If you select Run the program is downloaded to a temporary file, executed from there and the installation files may then be deleted.

It is possible that the temporary download file went to your user temp files, in which case it may still be there or to your temporary internet files.

Go Start > Run > type in %temp% > Enter, The Explorer window which opens may show the file/folder. The only guidance I can give you is that it will be a large file - I have no idea what it may be called, but it would have a .exe or .msi extension.

You could also look in your Temporary Internet files - IE > Tools > Internet Options > Temporary Internet Files > Settings > View Files.

That's about as much info. as I can give you without being in front of your screen.

Hold fire - there's every chance that some one else will chip in on this thread, possibly with a solution.

    hi!

Hmmmmm...... I looked in both places and it is not in there. The only place I found a file for it is in my c drive. it is 32.4 mb. When I double click on it it shows a ton of files in it. thank you... I will wait for awhile and see:) Thank you for all your help:)
