Hey everybody.. i'm a victim of a wierd ghost-like keyboard.. so, cutting to the point :

My computer boots normally and when the log-in screen appears, the keyboard doesn't function.. the num-lock light is on.. the multimedia keys are working fine.. but the keyboard buttons don't work.. it's like they don't exist..

i did my usual, went to Device Manager & deleted the keyboard and then scanned for hardware changes.. the keyboard was identified, but it asked for a driver - which didn't happen when i bought the board months ago -.. so i played along.. i installed the driver supplied by the k-board's vendor, but no new.. i even uninstalled it and used the driver supplied by Windows XP, but AGAIN nothing changed.. it keeps telling me this message :

"There was a problem installing this hardware :

Standard 101/102-key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard

Windows can not load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39) "

at first i thought its the keyboard, but when i tried my friend's and a standard kboard, same results..

what confuses me even more is the mouse.. it's functioning well.. so is the "on-screen keyboard" feature.. the actual keyboard is a ghost.. with a yellow ! in the device manager..

another method i tried to solve this, i bought the cable that makes PS/2 cable work from the USB.. even tried installing the board in the SafeMode, but it still gives me the **** (Code 39) error message..

i heard something about this being a registry error , but its highly unlikely since Windows is booting just fine.. the only place where the keyboard works is in the BIOS menu..

Guys, PLEASE.. Help.. am loosing it.. and the on-screen keyboard is torture..

Thank you for your time and in advance..

    Lou..

zlouk - Welcome to the Board :)

You may well have a corrupted Windows driver - as this is a System file I suggest you run System File Checker

Another option would be to use System Restore to restore your system to a date before the problem occurred.

thank you for your help.. BUT..

i tried to restore the OS, but no results.. i went to checkpoints more than 30 days back, no change.. even tried system checker, but when i went to the registry editor to modify it with the location of the "i386" file i couldn't find the registry file "HKEY...>SOFTWARE>WINDOWS ".. I found other regkeys.. i continued the system check and it still kept asking me for the CD.. i don't have the windows CD with me now..

i don't want to format, i got two online projects and i didnt see this coming.. is there any other working way to fix this? is it easily fixed by the system checker in theory? or did anyone face this issue and fixed it?

    yours,

    lou..

There's no certainty that running System File Checker will solve your problem, but FWIW attached a screenshot of the registry for the i386 folder on C:\.

    A good article here ....

I have moved your thread to the Hardware forum with title edit which may get it more attention from the hardware guys.

you did your best, and i appreciate your efforts man.. seriously..

as for me.. i did everything.. and the SFC scan still asks for the CD.. i guess i'll have to manage a WinXP CD.. maybe my i386 is corrupted.. hopefully, it will be sorted out.. if not, i guess i should also find some external HDD's and start salvaging what i can..

i'll fill you in on the progress..

    yours,

Well, the battle is over and am using the complete functions of my keyboard.. After a wreckless fight with the registry, it didn't fix my problem.. What fixed my problem was three things :

    1) Found and external harddrive

    2) Copied my important files there incase something bad happens..

    3) Booted the computer from the Windows XP CD..

    4) Format..

I tried fixing the registy and SFC scans but they didn't work.. Even when i replaced the existing I386 with a new one.. Nothing new.. So after a long fight with myself, i decided to format the C drive.. i know DUH.. but I wanted to find other ways than to format.. i hate formats..

Anyways, PeteC, Thank you so much for your help..

    Yours,

    Lou!
