    Using OE 6.00.2800.1807

Recently I've not been able to open or save attachements to email s that come from reliable sources (even myself). I think it may be related to the latest windoz update for W2KPro. I've also noticed that opening a win Word or Excel file on my machine takes a looooooooooooong time.

I have my own AVG & don't want Gates & his crew to manage my file security.

If I'm correct that the latest W2K 'security' update has caused these problems, how do I get rid of this new Gates blanket.

In Outlook Express go to Tools>Options>Security tab and uncheck "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus," click OK.

Even if previously unchecked, it can sometimes get re-checked by a Windows update.

pilotgal8--Do you run Yahoo Toolbar? If so, consider uninstalling it.
A common cure for what you report is to clean out your cache (Temporary Internet Files, Temp files, etc.) Simplest way to remove TIF is IE Tools|Internet Options|General tab|Delete Files.
A little more complicated but more thorough is Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools|DiskCleanup. After the scan check what you want to delete, then click OK.

    Thanks all.

Miz you had the answer. never thought a Win update could change those parms.......but I guess they want to control the world.

Thanks a ton for solving this annoying problem.

Thanks for the suggestion of a Yahoo toolbar, don't use any of those, but will keep it in mind if I run into another problem.

Now I just have to solve the problem of a slow down in opening WORD or Excell files previously stored on my mahcine that I've created. Might there be a similar setting in those progs?

Hi pilotgal8: Regarding the slow opening of Word and Excel files check your antivirus program to see if it is set to scan "Microsoft Office" files on opening. If so, turn that feature off and see if it speeds up the opening of these types of files.

I know that Norton AV does this by default and other brands of AV software may do so as well.

Some programs that you download will download a toolbar and have a check in it to go ahead and install it. Look carefully when downloading stuff. Adobe does this now and has done it for about 6 months. Right click on a blank space on the tool bar and see if any are listed and not checked. Also look in Add or Remove programs.

The download of Yahoo's toolbar when you download Reader is optional.
You have to uncheck the box to not allow it. But it is sneaky that the box is checked by default. Even worse is that many people are reporting problems keeping IE running when the Yahoo Toolbar is installed.
