I have a dialup account and when I am not surfing the net, it is constantly trying to connect. Other than keep cancelling, I have to disconnect my modem. Have tried deleting temp internet files but not cookies. Can anyone help?

    Cheers jaycee

    Hi jaycee.

This could be a peice of malware trying to connect to a rogue site, have you run any anti-spyware scans at all?

Rogue dialers do this and can rack up some big numbers on your phone bill.

Typically, these would be AxctiveX compnents, found in your 'Downloaded Programs Files' folder.

Try these apps to begin with, lets us know what they find. If need be I can move this topic over to proper forum.

DL and run AdAware & Spybot Search & Destroy. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy are 2 of the most trusted apps in the security area. They are both free, compliment each other nicely, and do not use a lot of resources. They can be found here:

    Spybot Search & Destroy v.1.4
    AdAware SE Free v1.06r

With AdAware and Spybot: DL, follow the install instructions, check for updates, then scan, repair/remove/quarantine anything found. Reboot before next scan with whichever app is next.

    May also check:

    Open up IE.
Select Tools "“ Internet Options "“ Connections Tab.

Make sure "“ Never dial a connection - is check marked.
Many legit programs like to call home n check for updates ect. Very annoying.

Hi folks, I will try what you suggested, do I need both spybot and Adware?

Did think about altering the connections rule but would I be able to dial up on demand?

That would be best as single security app can catch all the variants with many malwares.

Downloaded and ran spybot, result 5 pages of problems mostly Registry stuff-Web searches, funweb and tracking cookies, so don't know how to decide what to fix and what to leave. They are all red! Tempted to Format all drives and start again.

Let it fix them. You can always go back and get 1 or all of them if need be. I have never had to go back and get anything that has been fixed.

I echo Bills advice, nothing that can't be restored should something turn out not to work properly after fixing.

Still trying to sort out problem, will keep posted. Used Spybot, lost my Yahoo toolbar, couldnt log in to BBS but that may be because I temporarily changed internet security to HIGH
Recently downloaded Itunes could this be the cause of dialup? may remove it to find out. Will try Adware soon

Do you have a real firewall? One that works both incoming and outgoing. The one in windows is incoming only. Download this fire wall and when something tries to access the internet, it will let you know. Zone Alarm It does prompts and you can allow or deny.
