The network in the house connects these 2 machine. The XP machine can 'see' the W2KPro machine & can write files on it's shared D disk.

The w2kPro machine EXPLORE lists the XP machine title when trying to access XP files gets \\XPmachine not accesible Logon Failure: User account restriction.

XP machine has the disk marked sharable with read access for 'everyone'. Administrator is the logon used on the XP machine. USER is the logon ID used on the W2KPro machine.

The network sharing worked before the XP machine was upgraded from W2KPro.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Jason, that seems to be the problem USER on the 2K machine has a null password. HOWEVER, when logging onto the XP machine as Administrator, I used "Users & Passwords" in Control panel to try to set a password & was not allowed to set one.

I would set a password for USER on the W2K machine, but would that require keying in a passwrod for each logon (somthing I don't need to do now)? I'd like it stay this way.

    TIA

    Did you do this ?

1.Click Start, point to Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK to start the Group Policy Editor.
2.Open Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only.
    3. Double-click Limit local account use of blank passwords to consol logon only.
    4. Click Disabled, and then click OK.

Windows can "remember" the password, you don't have to enter the password everytime.

This one sounds weird, sorry, I have no idea about it. Maybe someone will give a suggestion.

You could try right clicking on "My Computer" and going to manage. From there go to "Local Users and Groups" then to "Users ".

Right click on the user you want to have access and click set password. Be carefull though, if that user account has their files made private then you will lose access to them (think: no more My docs) I'm fairly sure the user needs to have a password to have private files though.
