    Hey Guys,

I need the name, or names of excellent trustworthy online Trojan\Virus scanner sites, which also hopefully remove any such intrusions. This is for a friend that is concerned that she may have a Trojan\Virus on her computer & wants to find out & hopefully remove it\them, until she can get the funds for Anti software.

    Thanks for any reccomendations.

I guess any a/v program will do for trojans too. Norton Antivirus 2002, Grisoft AVG antivirus (free), eTrust EZAntivirus ($20/year).

Gee, thanks guys for the quick response.

This lady is a real novice & doesn't know anything except how to turn one on & send e-mail, or surf a little. I am trying to help steer her in the right direction on some things she needs & needs to know.

I needed these to help her out with until she is able to obtain the software that she needs for prevention.

I would give her this forum link, but she is so new, & doesn't understand things very easily. She would not understand 95% of what someone tries to tell her. Some people need step by step pictures & explicit text detail along with the pics until they get the basic idea of what's necessary to do just to keep one in proper working order, much less how to troubleshoot. :) They're "not" dumb persons to my way of thinking. They just don't understand written instructiions well & need a different way of being taught. Pictures, along with text really works better for them, especially at first.

I just jumped in with all fours when I got a computer & made all kinds of mistakes. Crashed a couple of times, but I learned from my goof up's. :) I'm the adventerous type anyway. :D

Thanks again all of you. I really appreciate it. It will help out a very nice lady.

    Daizy,

I rather gathered that when I went to the site. :D No problem.

Maybe all the stuff I chose to send her will be enough to either find something or set her mind at rest, one of the two. :)

Thanks again for all the help from everyone.

    Deloris:

I use a product called BOClean...it's not free but is a great Anti Trojan program. It has protected me twice in the last couple years from trojans.

    http://www.nsclean.com/

I use a combo of NAV Systemworks 2002, BOClean, Sygate's free firewall 5.0, and the Firewall on my router.

I also created a Virus Web page which has links to most of the Virus companies out there plus their online scanners. You can find it from my home page.

    Hi all,

I want to thank everyone for all of their input. It is much appreciated.

I am afraid though, that this lady is going to be even harder than I thought to teach. (sigh)

I sent screen shots & explicit, very simple, text instructions about only one web site at first, because I didn't want to overwhelm her with stuff. She couldn't understand them. I've never before had "anyone" that couldn't understand my screen shots that include very down to earth text instructions at the top, or bottom of the pic, in simple layman's terms, along with additional text instructions in the e-mail itself for things I couldn't make pics of. :( I've had some pretty difficult pupils before too, but this may prove to be a real challenge.

I feel like that she hasn't ever had anyone to physically show her how to do "anything" except how to boot up & send e-mail & surf from page to page. From what I could gather from her return letter, she has no idea how to download, install programs, send attachments, or do any kind of maintenance tasks.

I may really have my work cut out for me this time. :) I think I will suggest to her that I come up to Mountain View earlier than usual this Saturday, before time to start music jamming on the square, & go over to her house & show her a few things. That will be easier than my usual e-mail teaching anyway. Especially since she don't understand what I am sending her. Wish me luck, guys. I think I am going to need it. ;)

Thanks again to all of you.

There are two issues worth mentioning in relation to Lockdown:-

Firstly, the free version has rather pathetic detection and cleansing capabilities.

Secondly, this. The action brought by the Lockdown Corporation was, IMO, quite disgraceful and for this reason alone I would never recommend any Lockdown product (even if they did work as claimed!). At least Keith Little won.

    dmz1967,

    Thank you.

That sounds very good. Do you personally use it & can highly reccommend it? I am getting very cautious, because how do we know for sure that we can trust "any" of these programs themselves, unless a trusted source says we can? Even tough I've never had a program that I've installed to place a trojan on my computer that I know of, this is just a slightly paranoid question. :D Do you have any links for web sites that can back up the claims of this software besides the creator himself. :) Since this is all for a friend that I don't want her to get highly hacked off at me, I would prefer any and all back up material that I can find on the program.

I will look, myself, for back up praise, or thumbs down stuff. Hopefully I can find some.

If it were strictly for my own benefit, I could try it & if something happend that I didn't want, I could hopefully eradicate the problem with troubleshooting, but if not, I know how to FDisk & re-install. My friend doesn't know any of that & would be very upset & then I'd have to fix her computer to undo any damage. :D

It's always more important to make sure when it concerns a friend. Right?

Thank you for the freebie. It's just the ticket if it works out to be highly praised as a good one.

    brett,

    I read your links.

That's just the sort of thing I wanted to know about. "Trust!" Although I haven't read Keith's review of Paris' software, it is absolutely horendous that Paris did this to him. And someone as vengeful as Paris is certainly capable of creating software that "would" install Trojans, or unwanted spyware tracking files, or whatever else you can think of, on someone's computer.

As far as Paris, or anyone else is concerned, I say: If you can't take the heat, don't create bad software.

I think I shall forget about Swat It now.

As usual, brett, you are on top of things, & don't hesitate to expose the the slimeballs to those of us who don't know. That benefits us greatly.

Thanks again & keep up the good reporting. We all need it.

The review, if you're interested, can be found here.

You'll find a recent comparison of anti-trojan products here. It's worth noting that many anti-virus products now have trojan detection capabilities that are just as good as those of the dedicated anti-trojan programs (see this test too). In cases where a person is using an anti-virus product which scores well in terms of trojan detection (such as KAV, AVK or the dreaded McAfee), then a dedicated anti-trojan product is probably superfluous to their requirements.

That said, BOClean (mentioned by Dobhar) is an excellent product - it's lean, mean and fairly cheap - and is worth considering if only because NSClean are the fastest updaters in town!

I just happened to be browsing my website logs (a rare diversion for me) and spotted a referer to this thread.

Nice BBS y'all got here. :)

It's good to see the message getting out about my lawsuit and such. And it's good to see people getting sound advice WRT their security and privacy.

You might like knowing that I'm working on a whole lot of informative material, my final effort with respect to Lockdown et al. (Or so I hope at least!) Those interested should drop by my site now and then. It's a lot of stuff, just raw facts really, but all connected and correlated. Interrelated as it is, it won't be made public till complete. Probably a couple of weeks to go at least. Good news is, I just got a bit of help with it from a very kind volunteer. That should help move things along.

I think it'll prove to be very revealing, and useful for the long term.

Anyway, I thought you'd like knowing that I noticed.
