Whenever my son tries to use my computer to check his gmail, after entering his login name and password, he gets the following:

"Your browser's cookie functionality is turned off. Please turn it on "

Whenever he uses IE6, he puts gmail.com in the appropriate box and clicks on "allow." The same with FireFox (latest edition). Yet, he continues to get that error reading.

Any ideas on how to get both browsers to recognize the gmail cookie??

The cookie is likely not coming from the host name gmail.com. What to do is allow all cookies for one session and then look in the cookies folder to see if you can spot the cookie and what it is actually called, then add this to the allow list. If you have a lot of cookies in there then make a list before you start so you can identify the new one/s, or delete the present ones before you start.

It’s also possible that it may be a session cookie, which means it won’t actually be stored anywhere on the hard drive, but kept only in memory. They can be a little harder to get a hold of to see the host name. It’s also possible that they can change with each session or even each page, (for security reasons) so you will need to capture a few to see the pattern and the changing part of the cookie, usually just an alpha/numeric number. Then use wildcards (*) for the changing number.

For example if it was 123abc.gmail.com and the 123abc changed regularly, then you place *.gmail.com in your browsers cookie allow list.
