free flv or wmp converters or players

Does anyone know where I can download safe and free windows media player converters? I just downloaded an flv file and cannot play it. I want to convert flv files and other My space and You Tube files into wmp files so that I can view them offline after I move them from my temp folder into another folder where I store them. The new version of Windows Media Player does not do this. Do you know of any free and safe players or converters that can do this? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
