I just had my computer cleaned out professionally.. I guess there were a lot of things wrong in the registry, I added memory, etc. So now everything works much faster and easier .. except ...

My XP has two user accounts -- has for months. When I am signed on to AIM and the the second user switches over, my AIM signs off by itself. and I'm pretty sure all other applications close as well.

Under the user accounts preferences, Use Fast User Switching is checked, so nothing should close, but it keeps happening ....

I've checked all AIM preferences, but nothing stands out that may be in the way ....

    any thoughts?

    PeteC -

i was real hesitant to fiddle with the registry again since i have no idea how i got so many errors prior to my computer going beserk, but it's been a couple hours, i've logged in and out and it seems to be working .. so, thanks! let's hope it stays that way :)

Grr .. all SEEMED okay.. i woke up this a.m. and both users were signed off again .... if my computer is sitting for 3 hours or so it seems to work fine. but once it sits for a while, unactive, the problem seems to appear.

also, ive noticed: even though i might be the last person who was on the computer, and i do NOT log off or switch users before walking away -- the next time i go to my screen, the Welcome screen is there, not my desktop --- are these problems linked?

    any other thoughts??

Check out the Power Options in Control Panel - is anything set to turn off? Standby? Hibernate?

Check out Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced > Uncheck 'Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby'.

OK - I was going to suggest looking at Group Policy where I believe there is the option to log off automatically after xx mins/hrs, but that is only available in Pro.

If the AIM problem is resolved may I suggest you start another thread titled along the lines of 'XP Home logs off when computer idle' - or words to that effect. This may draw in others who were not savvy with AIM.

    PeteC -
I think I have lost it all ..the problem seems to have gone away -- the issue? I completely overlooked the "on return, go to welcome screen" under the screensaver option. I dont know why that causes people to be logged offline, but it did .. all seems to be okay now .....

sorry -- but thanks for all your help. i thought i was going nuts

I'm glad you found that :) Not an option with my screensaver or interface - Windows Classic. I see 'On resume, password protect'.
