well after recently having to reinstall my windows xp pro x64, http://windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=56039 , i now recieve an error when i try to do windows update. i asked a friend and he told me to reintall windows again, but that didnt help. ive recieved a total of 3 different error messages, 0x80072EE7, 0x80096010, and 0x8009200D. i recieve 0x80072EE7 when i try to use windows update in safe mode w/ networking. when i try to use windows update any other time i get either 0x80096010 or 0x8009200D and i cant seem to notice a pattern that determines which i get. not only do i get these errors, but i am unable to install most programs. when i try to install firefox i get an error saying "7-zip Data Error... Unspecified Error ", when i try to install nod32 x64 i get "Error Some installation files are corrupt. Please download a fresh copy and retry the installation" (i even get that after downloading a new copy), and when i tried to install other programs such as AVG x64 before i reinstalled xp i got an error that i cant remember. basicly every program gives some sort of error except for windows patch installations which seldom work. now ive looked all over the web for fixes and ive tried everything ive found to no avail. i believe it may have something to do with my windows installer but i cant find a link for it for xp x64 so im stuck there. please help  and sorry for the long post

    Well, lets see:

You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error 0x80072EFD," "Error 0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message when you try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site

This error code translates to ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT. This could be caused by firewall software blocking the Windows Update Site.

Check the %SYSTEMROOT%\Windowsupdate.log file for more details.

Translation: Not a cryptographic message or the cryptographic message is not formatted correctly.

Solution: Reregister DLL files that are associated with Cryptographic Services

Go to Start > Run type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.

At the command prompt, type the following commands, and press ENTER after each command:

    regsvr32 /u softpub.dll
    regsvr32 /u wintrust.dll
    regsvr32 /u initpki.dll
    regsvr32 /u dssenh.dll
    regsvr32 /u rsaenh.dll
    regsvr32 /u gpkcsp.dll
    regsvr32 /u sccbase.dll
    regsvr32 /u slbcsp.dll
    regsvr32 /u mssip32.dll
    regsvr32 /u cryptdlg.dll
    exit

Note: click OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box when prompted.

    Restart Windows.

Go to Start > Run type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.

At the command prompt, type the following commands, and press ENTER after each command:

    regsvr32 softpub.dll
    regsvr32 wintrust.dll
    regsvr32 initpki.dll
    regsvr32 dssenh.dll
    regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
    regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
    regsvr32 sccbase.dll
    regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
    regsvr32 mssip32.dll
    regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
    exit

Note: click OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box when prompted.

Restart and see if you can now successfully use Windows Update site.

oh, youre right i completely missed that note, but at the moment my computer is at my work where a friend was trying to reinstall windows x64 from his copy. no word on how that turned out yet, im hoping for the best. i was there while he reformatted my disk and checked it for a few other things, but i left shortly after that. i guess the windowslog wont be there any more, but if we reinstall xp x64 and the errors keep shwoing up ill get right back to this topic. thank you arie
