Unable to change Home Page

Hello, Long time no post...

I have the exact same problem as posted by sweenitodd here . I also know of the same problem on two other computers and each of these three computers are set to different home pages: google.com, yahoo.com and msn.com. None will change. All of the problems were noticed around a month ago.

It had been a couple of years since I reformatted this computer so reciently I decided give it new life. After the reformat and AV installation/updates and before all the windows/office updates I did sucessfully change the home page.

I believe the problem is one of the windows updates but the only way I know of proving it is installing my programs and updates one at a time doing HomePage test after each update. WOW.. sounds like a lot of work to me.

Any suggestions?

 

I have been hearing this a lot too. My mother can't change her homepage at all either. It is stuck on the company website/homepage of MDG where she got her computer. The computer is too new to have adaware/spyware, so I think one of the updates may be causing it.

 

To eliminate one source for this problem:

If Spybot is running on the systems, spybot has an option in Tools > IE Tweaks > Miscellaneous Locks to lock the home page setting. Or there might be another anti malware app that's doing this.

Otherwise, yes, you're going have to run this down by testing after each update.

I know spybot is not on my mother's computer, so it was probably an update. Oh well....Grr...

 

I agree, It may be another anti malware and I do have others. I have uninstalled each of them, ran ccleaner but I am still not sure the uninstalls were completely cleared... maybe some residue was left in the registry.

A couple of weeks ago I spent about three hours with a the Symantec help desk... The young man was really sharp but we did not find the problem.

Most people never change their home page so the would not see the problem.

I have seen Hijacked computers before and dont think this is my problem but I ran HijackThis and I see no problems.

I did remove R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/ and attempted to make the home page change but still no good.

If you have ZA firewall 6.5, that may be the cause. Earlier versions 6.1 and earlier do not do this.

I don't see anything bad in your HJT log. But the version of HJT you have is out of date.

http://radiosplace.com/ HJT v1.99.1 and there are added categories, for Services - 023 entries, in the new version.

HJT log still looks Ok.

Download Autoruns - execute and run.

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/autoruns.shtml

Look in the IE tab. Shows the BrowserHelperObjects and Tool bars attatched to IE. Try disabling them one by one, just uncheck them.

The other way to do this: IE Tools > Manage Add ons. You'll see, besides the BHO's and tool bars, the installed ActiveX objects.

Also have a look around in the other startup locations, maybe you can spot something. Easier to "play" with the startups with Autoruns than with Window's built in capacity.

Thanks Charles, I will do that when I get back to good old Florida... Papillion OK is beautiful... 30 years in the USN took me all over the world, all the eastern, southern and western states but non in the middle... I think next tear me and the wife will do a couple of months of travel.

I use IE and when I want to change my Home page-

I navigate to the site I wish to use.
Select TOOLS from the nenu at the top.
Select Internet Options.
Check the General Tab.
Then select "Use current."

This has not failed me yet.

Did you read my post about Zone Alarm? I noticed from your HJT log that you are using it.

If you are using the free version, then the recently released version 6.5.731 solves the problem of IE 6 home page beimng locked by ZA (v 6.5)

I'll be away for two weeks starting Monday, the 24th, but will have access to a Computer.

I'm dying to find out what this Home page business is all about. All of a sudden, we (BBS) are getting a spate of can't change home page posts. That raises the suspicioin that the culprit is MS Updates. If its ZA, easily worked around, I think. I have ZA Pro v6.5 and I don't have that problem.

Hey All,
I am finally back home... Guess what!! ZoneLabs put out an update for ZoneAlarm and the problem is solved. As you know they give an option to update or new install, I always recommend the new install. I did the new install of version 6.5.731.000 and problem solved... I did previously, a couple of weeks ago, uninstall the program to no avail so apparent something was left in the registry.

If this had happened a few weeks ago it would have save me one heck of a lot of hours. Oh well, I am retired and can afford the time.

SpySweeper can cause the problem

If you happen to be using SpySweeper, one of the "shields" is referred to as an IE Hijack Shield. If you edit the HiJack Shield settings, you will see that one of them is for Home Page Shield. Unless you click on the "Alert if changing the home page" you will never be able to successfully change your Home page.
