Every 15 minutes exactly I have a tab that appears and disappears quickly on the taskbar. The tab has no text and is only there for a second. It also kicks me out of games sometimes. Ive done many many many scans and posted on another site and nothing helped. I tried ewido, spybot, adaware, and a few others. I did a search and saw this thread with the same problem:

    Welcome to the forums.

In the interest of fairness, if you could please let us know what other forum you're working with.

Having more than one HJT analyst working on a log file is certainly not the best way to get to everyone in a reasonable amount of time when they are seeking help. We all try our best to maximise our time to get to the most people.

That being said, does your firewall give you any information about any apps trying to connect to the internet? I would check for any such activity. This does not appear to be malware. I'd wager it's some app installed either making a connection or trying to give some sort of info. But I could be wrong.

Sure the forum was on another site, it was spywarewarrior.com. The guy hasnt responded since June 20 2006, and I havent seen him on the forum at all since, im not being impatient, just didnt know if he would be back or not and when I saw the other post here, I figured it was worth a try. As far as my firewall, im using Mcafee, and it does show computers trying to make an unsolicted connection, but Im not real sure where to check for what you are asking. Nothing pops up when the taskbar tab happens. Now when I go to internet programs in mcafee, there are a whole bunch of things, most familiar, some not. I guess I could have granted access to something not knowing, but usually im careful about that.

Yeah, I guess no reply since June 20 is long enough to wait.

I can't find anything specific on where to look for the firewall logs on the McAfee firewall, try the 'help' files to see where you can access them, most all pay for fws have this option, but each is different.

Also you can Google each program listed as having outbound access, the ones which you may not be sure of. That's basically what I'd do.

Maybe you could help me a little on some of these, I googled the following but most come up in foreign languages. I copied and pasted the items im not sure of here. Also, when I did more information on the firewall program, the mcafee site says no documentation found. Also, on the firewall program, it says "program no longer exists" but still lists these filenames with full access permissions. Here they are:

    AUMGR.EXE
    C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\CROCHET\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP\AUMGR.EXE

    Permission: Allow Full Access
    Rule created on: 5/20/2006 12:05:06 A

    AUTODL%3FBUNDLEID=10380_B19770DE.EXE
    C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\CROCHET\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP\AUTODL%3FBUNDLEID=10380_B19770DE.EXE

    Permission: Allow Full Access
Rule created on: 5/6/2006 8:01:38 PM

This application has Full Access to the Internet. It is possible for this application to send and receive data with any computer.

    EREG.EXE
    D:\SUPPORT\EREG.EXE

    Permission: Allow Full

I can get the event log on my firewall program, however, it doesnt show what applications are trying to access the internet, it does list a heck of a lot of computers trying to access mine through ports and stuff.

If the firewall says the files are no longer there, then just remove them from the log\list, they won't be any threat.

While I couldn't find much of anything about the first 2, the third was legit.

Another thing, does this behavior start at any particular time, or does it begin as soon as you turn on the PC? I found one link where someone said as soon as they opened outlook, it started, every 15 minutes.

Btw, do you have Windows Messenger turned off?

You can read about how on this MS MVP page

Yeah I have messenger disabled, and I deleted the ones with the program no longer existing from the firewall, but I still get the tab popup in the taskbar. I did notice in my outlook that everything is set to 15 minutes, but that could be coincidence. I have the same outlook on my laptop and I dont get the popup on it. It does it from the time I start up my computer and I never even open outlook. I use outlook express for my email purposes.

OK, so to test this, why don't you change this setting to say 20 minutes and see what happens.

    Hi croc1073

Have you recently installed a new printer or Digital camera?

I had the same problem. But I am using a HP computer, printer and camera.

The way I figured out what it was that was opening, was to open task manager and when the program opened (or popped up in the task bar) I did a print screen of the task managers processes when it came up. then checked it with the normal processes when it was closed.

Come to find out that my printers software was checking for updates every 15 minutes:eek:

Well I have a dell computer and an HP printer, very possible its the printer software, Ive thought about it, but I dont see it anywhere in the software. I am going to try and do what you said to do and see if I can find out. It still is happening every 15 minutes exact. Very annoying little thing. I tried what you said with the print screen, everything looks the same when it pops up, its so fast though, I might not be catching it just right on the processes. Do you remember what the name of the process was that caused your trouble?

    Hi croc1073

HP Printer, That sounds like it.

I stopped this process in msconfig.

hpcmpmgr - It is part of hp's task manager.

If you find it in msconfig and stop it, you will have to check for updates for your printer manually.

    Here's how to find it.
    Click "start"
    Click "run "
    Type in "msconfig" click OK.
Click the "start up" tab at the top
    uncheck "hpcmpmgr"
Click apply and OK then OK again at the warning window that comes up.
The next time you reboot you will get a window that say something about a custom start up.
Check the box that says "Don't show this again" and close it.

Let me know how it goes.

    Great work Geri.

I had a feeling it was going to be related to some software on the system, wsa too timely for it to be malware. If anything, malware wants to hide in most cases. Popups rarely, if ever can be timed as they were here.
