I recently reinstalled windows XP Pro on an older P3 machine to help out a needy family. For some unknown reason, I cannot install the HP5550 Drivers from the original driver CD. I have installed and uninstalled the software, connected and disconnected the printer. The PC for some reason just does not seem to recognize that there is hardware on the end of the parallel cable attached to the PC... any suggestions? Will it help to try another cable or should I try getting a USB cable instead. Has anyone else experienced this?

You could try a new cord or try to get the drivers from the internet. I fthat doesn't work then you can also try to go into your drivers and troubleshoot them.

    Try this way:

Go to Device Manager and remove/Delete all USB Controllers.

Reboot. Windows will re install the controllers.

Try uninstalling the LPT port in Device Manager. It will be automatically reinstalled on reboot.

    Look for updated motherboard/chipset drivers.
