Does anyone know of a 2003 file utility that actually allows you to manage illegial files/folders on a 2003 server. We migrated from Netware to Windows server 2003 3 years ago, and are constantly running into illegial file names, file is too deep, etc errors. We never had this problem with Netware. Why does the Windows OS allow users to create files and folders that can't be deleted?

    Thanks,

    Hi, MegaByte.
You can use delinvfile.exe to erase anything on your computer that is not erasable with the ordinary tools. Use it with care, since there's no UNDO !
The thing that puzzles me is the fact that you get these kind of files and directories. During the upgrade you did from Netware to Windows, you kept the files intact? Was that volume formatted? What file system do you have now on it? NTFS? FAT32?

Delinfile works sometimes. We're three years past the netware migration. The files and folders we can't delete on our NTFS volumes are newly created by our users. The last two summers, I had to backup my NTFS volumes, reformat them and restore everything except what I couldn't delete. For some reason, the windows 2003 OS allows applications to create files with illegal names, or file names that are too long, or files and folders that are too deep to delete or modify. I've read all the microsoft articles on this issue, and sometimes their suggestions do work. Today, I installed OS X on an iMAC, and was able to cleanly delete files and folders that were previously impervious to deletion. I'm thinking of writing an article for Windows Magazine explaining how lame the windows 2003 file system is, because one needs a MAC to fully administer it ;) Thanks for your suggestions and post.
