    Hi guys,

I'm new here and I'd like to say hello to everyone.
Starting off with a few problems right away (was expected I guess) :D
    First problem:
My computer keeps crashing for no apparent reason it appears at random (I'm guessing it's either when the graphics card or sound card are "working ").

    Here's the situation:
It can randomly crash when I'm listening to .mp3's (not always) or if I'm recording something (I'm a guitarist) with my soundcard, or if I simply surf the web and scroll down a text in a forum, like here with you guys.
The strangest thing is that this happened when I copy/pasted a text in MS Word (using "ctrl+insert" and then "shift+insert" on the keyboard) - this
    happened twice.

I think the problem lies within the hardware, as my computer is safe, and Spy/Virus free (running ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm Security Suite as firewall/antivirus and Lavasoft Ad-Aware and even Spybot Search & Destroy) - all up to date of course.

My software is WinXP Home (original) with SP2 and all updates installed.
    Hardware:
CPU: AMD Athlon 4000+ (with big and good working cooler)
    RAM: 2 GB's
    PSU: 420 Watts
M/B: Asus A8V Deluxe (latest BIOS installed)
Harddrive: 2 x 250 GB each (lots of space left)
Soundcard: M-Audio Delta 2496 (latest drivers installed)
Graphicscard: Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro (ATI) (latest drivers installed)

all latest drivers installed for all hardware... didn't help though.

Also, what's strange, sometimes when it crashes, the screen just goes black and the system reboots...
Other times, I get a blue screen with an error display (white text) for about a second (since it's only a second I cannot read it fast enough to know what it's saying), then the blues screen disappears immediately and the system reboots...
And again at other times (but very seldomly - this has happened only twice) I get a screen like this:

    http://home.arcor.de/schneidas/DSC01191.JPG

I could still move the mouse around (note: the mouse pointer is the black square there).
And then after about 20 secs, the screen went balck for a second, and then this image again (it appeares as the graphics card wanted to "refresh" or something).

Anyway, after reading through the board here I figured out how to do these dumps, but I cannot understand anything in these files.
Following in the next post, here's the dump for when my computer crashed again today.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,
sorry for the long post guys.

    Schneidas

Check the System Log in Event Viewer for additional error messages that might help pinpoint the device or driver that is causing the bug check.

To open Event Viewer, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc, click OK.

Check your Application and System logs for errors.

You can double click on any error for more details, and there is also a button to copy the error to your clipboard for easy copying & pasting.

    Hi Arie,

thanks a lot for your reply.
I checked the system log in the event viewer.
There are severl errors in both the system log and the application log.
Total, I guess I'm looking at 200+ errors.

In the system log, I have about 150 errors in which the source always is
"W32Time " and the description reads:
"The time provider NtpClient is configured to acquire time from one or more time sources, however none of the sources are currently accessible. No attempt to contact a source will be made for 14 minutes. NtpClient has no source of accurate time. "

and I have about 20 "Warnings" where the source is "TCPIP " and the
    description is this:
"TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts. "

I don't know what the warnings mean, but as far as the errors, I'm guessing it's due to the ZoneLabs Internet Security firewall. It blocks Windows from synchronizing the time with the Internet time server when the firewall is on.
(I have no idea how to bypass this, so I disabled the synchronizing stuff now).
But I don't think that's what was causing the crashing, or could it?

Anyway, as far as the Application log, I have a few errors and about 70 warnings. But my PC crashed today and yesterday and there's no error or warning on that day (most warnings or errors are older than a month) so I'm not sure if I have a problem there.

Something else, today my PC crashed twice again but no log was written for today in Windows/Minidump???
    Anyone got any idea why?

    What do I do know?

    Thanks,
    Schneidas

Just make sure that your machine is configured to write out a dump by following the directions from microsoft.

You are right, the errors & warnings don't seem to relate to your BSOD.

Just wait for the next one I guess :(

Arie, my machine is configured to write out dump files. I think the problem is that when the computer crashes, there's not always a BSOD, so it doesn't always write out a dump file.

Alright got another BSOD (only lasts 1-2 seconds each time then it reboots).

    Dump file was written:

    KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
    happening.

Ok, this is driving me crazy...
So I write the post above, copy the dump data into the post and the second I hit the "Submit Reply "-button, my computer "blacks out" and reboots.
Glad, the post made it though...

Although, this time no BSOD, and no dump file was written out...

Can it be the Internet causing the crashes? (because the second I clicked the button the crash happened)
But as I said, I'm totally virus/spy/malware free, behind a firewall, everything updated & checked for errors/viruses/spyware etc.

Also, each time a crash happens I cannot connect to the internet for about 1 minute and I get this message:
"connecting through WAN Miniport (PPPOE) "
This is a normal message of course, which I get every time I connect, but normally it is displayed for not even half a second - after a crash I get this for about a minute, and then everything works normally again...
    Strangest thing

And another thing (sorry, don't try to spam or anything... just trying to help me/you guys figure out what's going on here):

Just happened 3 more times (but no BSOD):
I was reading through a bunch of threads, while listening to .mp3's simultaneously.
Scrolled down a thread and the computer "froze ", meaning no graphics moving, no mouse-pointer was able to move, but mp3 was still playing and went on playing till the end of the song.
Then I reboot manually (reset-button on case)...

After 5 minutes, again same scenario, going through threads, .mp3 playing.
I wanted to scroll down the thread, the computer "froze" - I couldn't scroll down, but mouse pointer was moving this time, and .mp3 (media player) still playing... I clicked the mouse like 3 times (out of spite), got an interior beep (inside the case) and mouse pointer froze, but .mp3 still playing till the song was over...
    So, again reboot manually...

    Any ideas? I'm desperate!

Probably the best thing to do is to go to Microsoft Support Services, and select an option to "open" a support request.

You can use the log file (debuglog.txt) generated to supply the needed information to start your support request.

    schneidas,

Another thing you can do is stop the computer from 'automatically' rebooting after a crash (this allows reading the BSOD). Right-click 'MyComputer', then select 'Properties', then the 'Advanced' tab, then click 'Settings' under 'Start up and Recovery'. Remove the check from ' automatically restart' under System Failure.

I don't pretend to be very apt at reading these 'dump(b) logs', these problems have been known to occur because of faulty RAM or some problem in the hard disk.

Check your RAM with memcheck or something like it and run chkdsk /r on all your disk drive partitions.

hey guys, thanks for your help so far.
Did a 4-hour memcheck yesterday. Everything was fine with the memory (thank god).

Thanks for letting me know how to disable the automatic restart.
I could read the BSOD now, but it didn't really help me...

    So here's the thing.
I did a lot of research on the net the last few days and it appears that Asus boards (mine is Asus A8V Deluxe) with VIA Chipsets (I believe the A8V Deluxe has the KT800 PRO Chipset) are known to cause these problems with ATI graphic cards (Sapphire - Atlantis 9800PRO (ATI CHIPSET))...

So I guess, I either change the Motherboard, or the graphics card.

    What would you guys recommend?
Of course, it's way simpler to swap out the graphics card, rather than taking out the whole motherboard, so I was thinking of going with a new gc.

Or is the Asus A8V a bad M/B??
Please post some opinions if you like, I'd greatly appreciate your input

Never had a problem with a ASUS mobo (knocks on wood). :D I have had problems with ATI video cards though (always crashing). That's just me though, I know several people that just love them. I'll vote for changing the video card.

    Thanks for your input.
Another thing, can it be possible that my PSU is the cause of my problem?
I certainly hope not as it was quite expensive when I bought it a year back.
The ATI 9800PRO needs direct power from the PSU. Here are the specs of my PSU plus a .jpg from "SpeedFan" - a program which measures fanspeed, voltages etc.

oh, and here's a pic of the blue screen I got.
Is there any usuable info for me in those numbers at the bottom that point to the cause of my prob?

    Thanks as always

    High temps

Two of your temperatures (125C) are really high. Your screenshot doesn't say what there for. That could be part of your problem. Do you know what they are?

    Yeah I know...
I figure something's not right with this FanSpeed programm, as Lavalyst Everest is way more accurate and doesn't show me that 125C's...

    Here's Everest's stats:

    http://home.arcor.de/schneidas/Everest.JPG

I have 3 fans in my case (1 at the PSU, 1 at the back of the case (inside) and a big arctic cooler (or was it Zalman) for the CPU, all working pretty good.
Funny though, neither Everest, FanSpeed or my BIOS can't detect them (but they're installed and running)

You know what else is funny?
When you start your computer, normally, before the system BIOS (RAM check etc.) is displayed, you get your video card BIOS etc. on display.
At least that what I was used to when I had nvidia and other non-ATI cards back a while.

Since I have this ATI card, there was never a display of the cards BIOS when powering up the computer. I've always wondered about this but never bothered to ask.
Can this be part of the problem? I don't get it...

btw, thanks so far to all that helped me in this thread.
I really appreciate the help guys :)

It just keeps getting better and better...
    Today I got this screen:

    http://home.arcor.de/schneidas/DSC01211.JPG

The .mp3 I was listening to kept on playing normally though. But the screen had frozen like this.
After I reboot, everything was working fine again (well untill it happens again).
Now, that's clearly a hardware issue, right?

So, what to do now? Buy a new graphics card? Buy a new PSU? Or both?

If you just want to throw some $$ at the problem in the hope it goes away... I'd say yes.

Or you could try my suggestion from Post #9 and see if you can get it pinned down....
