Charles:

When I went to my Restore calendar and lists, I had the choices of up to 6 or 7 restore points per day back for the almost the whole Month? Most have been initiated by Windows Defender Maybe when I check on the Defender Page for updates. Lenny

Fix for KB917283?

Problems with Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB917283)?

There are frequent problems with the installation of Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB917283) for many people.

1: So far the quick fix is to Update .NET 2.0 at this link (32Bit):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en

2: Then attempt to run the (KB917283) update.

Many people never updated the framework and MS never caught it. Some ATI users may need to disable/exit the Catalyst Control center before updating the framework.

I hope this helps out.

Hi Lenny,

Go into the Security Center, under Resources click on the last item "Change the way Security Center alerts me ".

Then in the new window, uncheck:
Automatic Updates
Alert me if my computer is at risk because of the settings...

Maybe that will take care of the harangue.

Regards - Charles

Maybe Microsoft did something?

Charles: that may not be necessary? Everything is back to normal. Microsoft NET. Framework 2.0 Is not In my computer any more? At least I can not find it. My update site now says no Priority Updates Needed. The update Microsoft NET. Framework 2.0 is not found in my hidden updates. I have no more warnings or pop up balloons.

Well at least Here Is Hoping I will just keep my fingers crossed?

Thanks Again I went to the Security Centre and check out what you told me, and I unchecked where you told me to. I never knew that that option was even available. Your Friend, Lenny

P.S. when I said that Microsoft NET. Framework 2.0 is not in my computer, I mean that it does not appear in the Add or Remove List of Programs? Both {Microsoft NET. Framework 1.1} and {Microsoft NET. Framework 1.1 Hotfix KB886903} are , however still listed.

TKang: Thanks for your input.

Yesterday I was into that Microsoft Web Site and tried -------
Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x86)

The update Microsoft NET.Framework 2.0 still would not install?
Now, I do not have that option; as Microsoft Update no longer tell me that it is a Priority Critical Update for my computer, And no longer even offer it to me. loonychoons

Updated Fix information KB917283.

Updated a bit for clarity (or add to confusion  ).

The Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB917283) continues to fail with MS Update/OneCare, with OneCare continuing to pop-up updates required. The same situation occurs without OneCare installed.

 Is seems to be caused by (many) people never updated the framework 2.0 (FEB06) or reinstalled a SDK and MS seemingly has not caught it through automatic updates.

Thus far the fix appears to be (10 sucessful updates):

1: Turn automatic updates off.

2: Download .NET 2.0 (for 32-Bit) at this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en

Note: Some ATI VGA users may need to disable/exit the Catalyst Control Center (which uses .NET) before updating the framework. We ran into one machine that had this situation.

OR

2a: Download .NET 2.0 (for 64-Bit) at this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...00-ACF8-4FA1-AFFB-40E78D788B00&displaylang=en
We have not seen a problem with XP 64-Bit but for completeness...

3: Uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 and reboot.

4: Install Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (for 32-bit: dotnetfx.exe 3/22/2006 or for 64-bit: NetFx64.exe 3/30/2006) and reboot.

5: Then run MS Update (and install KB917283) then reboot.

6: Turn automatic updates on (assuming that is your preference).

This appears to clear up the situation. If the .NET is real bad there is a cleaner tool at MS for .NET.
I hope this helps you.

loonychoons... If you do not have .NET 2.0 installed you (should) not have KB917283 try to install.

I have tried to follow your repair steps, but ran into the following.

Judy: at Step #1 then #3 Install this tool on your computer.

I get the following warning---------

loonychoons--In the Registry ( HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall ) all those long alphanumerics in the left panel refer to programs that Windows thinks are installed. It may be laborious (see below) but if you click on each you will find which is Net Framework and you can delete the key. Now Windows no longer thinks Net Framework is installed.
As mentioned, finding the right alphanumeric can be a pain. You can run a Registry|Edit|Find on "Framework" without the quotes.
You will find several listings.
BUT in that Key I gave at the beginning you may find it in the left panel list under "Microsoft .Net Framework ".
On my PC I find it as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{CB2F7EDD-9D1F-43C1-90FC-4F52EAE172A1}
As well as (for a Hotfix) as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\M886903
And under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Microsoft .Net Framework .
But I have Net Framework 1.1 so the CLSID may be different.
In any event back up the Registry before making any changes (Registry|File|Export) so you can easily restore if you do not like the changes.

Hi: Jim.

Thank you, for all that info. I am going to file it for future reference. Why? Because--- Stupid me did not RE REGISTER that Windows Installer Properly as suggested by Judy Wu from Microsoft. When I was a little more careful it installed just fine!

After that I was able to open that cleaner utility. and then just walk through the steps and uninstalled that Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 and KB866903 Hotfix!!!!!

I still do not know whether or not that program "Microsoft Visual #J .NET 1.1 Redistribution" is part of that {.NET Framework} and can or should I remove it as well?

To TKang:

Thank you for that super information that you posted on this thread about that update FIX. {Post # 26}

But, I do not plan to use " Microsoft .NET Framework "Therefore I have just dropped it there.

I am sure that the info you supplied has helped many others though.

I do have a question, you mentioned 32 & 64 Bit units, how could someone; like maybe me; ascertain which I might have on my computer?

You are running 32-Bit...

Hi Lenny. As far as XP operating systems; XP-Home,XP-Media Center 2005, and XP-Pro are 32-bit. If you are running a later model Intel or an AMD64 you can run Microsoft Windows XP Professional X64 Edition. Such as: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16837102065

In your sig block you are listing: MSWin.XPhomeSP2 and a Celeron 2.50 CPU. http://indigo.intel.com/compare_cpu/showchart.aspx?mmID=853365&familyID=3&culture=en-US I think this is correct.
You are running 32-Bit (or also called x86). This is a decent PDF on x64 tech, although dated. http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/vectors/2004_em64t.pdf

Although you are not planning on it now; many things run with the .NET 2.0, if you are planning to update software (or components) later.

I know loonychoons is satisfied with the present status, but I think I gave some incorrect information in post 29 above.
http://www.windowsbbs.com/showpost.php?p=299344&postcount=29
By deleting entries in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
key you will delete the program from the Control Panel list.
To make Windows think a program is not installed, you change Is_Installed's value to 0 (from 1) in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components
It will be a little time consuming to figure out which of the CLSID number applies to the program you want to do this to, but clicking on each CLSID will tell you this.

Jim and/ or Charles and/or anyone. Help!

Jim:I think that I discovered what you are mentioning, And I could probably use the original information anyway! After using the removal Program that Judy wu at Microsoft gave me , it worked fine, And Removed them.

I then went into Control Panel, Add or Remove Windows Programs, the two programs that I had removed earlier were still listed, but only listed as the programs were gone. I know that because they showed no size and when I asked" Add or Remove" to remove them, I got message " can only remove programs that are actually installed.

I now have an odd item to ask about? I use Xsoftspyware just to see if I have any Bugs or Spy and/or adware in my system, I got the following hit:---{Window Update Feature DiRegistry Value ChAdware Software\microsoft\security certer\updatedisablenotify\1:mad::1 Severe Risk}

Am I reading this right did Microsoft install an Adware into my computer Registry that would let their security center know or notify them that I disabled an update? also under Xoftspy list of Danger levels it says Severe Risk.

What should I do about this, and /or should I be worried about this?

Thanks Lenny

Hi Lenny,

What thats about is the Security Center notification - what you were complaining about, and which I showed you how to turn off. Some anti malware programs react to turning the notification off in this way; I know Spybot does. You can safely have Xoftspy ignore it.

Regards - Charles
