i am unable to play dvds in WMP.
when i try it says "WMP cannot play the dvd because a compatible dvd decoder is not installed ".

before i reinstalled XP it used to work fine.
now, i have DivX codec installed, but it still wont play.

    any suggestions?

Get Windows Media Player 11. It should do it and do it quiter well. I have about three DVD players: ATI, Power DVD, and Nero Showtime. I'm not sure if Windows Media Player is using one of them for an engine.

That is for WMP 8, 9, 10 which did need a special codec in addition to whatever. WMP 11 is playing DVDs on my computer. I'm just not sure if it is using one of my software DVD players for an engine or if WMP 11 supports DVD playback natively.

There are a lot of issues if you use a Windows based online music download service. But if you don't, it's a pretty slick piece of software.

But from what I can see, WMP does support DVD playback natively.

I probably wouldn't advise using WMP11 at the moment. I have the beta version, & whilst it has good points about it, there are still a lot of bugs in it and it is very slow.

I currently use the full K-Lite codec pack to play media inside WMP. It is great as you can throw almost any format at it and it will handle it.
