I decided to finally give in and make the switch to Thunderbird as my e-mail (and problably to Foxfire as browser). But some hitches occured.

1/ Two address books didn't make the transition. "Personal Address Book" and "Collected Addresses" were empty. I tried Importing, but a few addresses didn't make it.

2/ (This was an exisiting problem with 7.2, so maybe it needs to be corrected there first.) Two of my mail folders were having problem getting mail, so I renamed them "Don't Work" and "Unusable." I was able to empty them, but I cannot delete them.

    Cal,

Export your Netscape Address Books as LDIF files, and then import into Thunderbird, and see if all the recipients are listed.

Did you try deleting Unusable and Don't Work in Windows Explorer? That should work for you, but you must close Thunderbird first, or Netscape. As a rule it's a good idea to resolve problems before carrying them over to another application. But I think you can resolve these two issues... ;)

Let us know if you continue to have problems.

I had a problem importing addresses from a .ldif file only once, and it was with an address book containing over 1200 addresses, and it was from AOL Communicator, which for a time was a cousin of Netscape6.x. Considering the problems with NS6.x (I don't believe that AB were exportable), my wife, who owned the address book, considered herself lucky. Almost 800 addresses were imported flawlessly, while others had only the name, or some undeciferable characters.

    Some Progress

    Romana,

Your suggestion takes care of the two "bad" folders. I removed them from the TB folder, however. I could not find them in the NS folders.

(Actually, part of the reason that I'm going to TB is that over the years of upgrade after upgrade, my paths don't always resemble those you mention to users with problems.)

However, I appear to have lost some names in my address books. I'm entertaining the thought of reinstalling TB. (I have no where the number of entries that Westside mentioned.)

One of the other idiosyncrasies of my NS mailer is that I no longer can view the address books other then the main one unless I am in the compose mode. So, unless there's a fix to that problem I'd have to clean up the books manually.

    Thoughts?

    Cal,

What OS do you run? That could account for the difference in the paths of the Profiles folder. See this page for the Profiles Folder Location: http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/ns7profloc.html

Uninstalling Thunderbird and reinstalling Thunderbird will do nothing for the problem you are having. The problem is in your Profile, which isn't affected by reinstalling the program.

Are you trying to view the Address Books by using the options shown in these two Screen Shots?

    On the air

Thanks to the suggestions here, I am on the air. For those who may follow this thread and could glean info for themselves, yes, I tried to follow the screen shots. However, part of the problems was I could only get to address books other then my "Personal Address Book" by going through a compose session.

I suspect my NS7 mailer is messed up more then I knew. As of now all is well.

I probably will be back in a few days after using Thunderbird and FoxFire. If I decide to stay with them (and at the momnet it looks like I will) I'd like to delte the NS8 browser only and rid my system of the NS mailer.

    :)

Cal, like an extreme liberal-conservative, don't get rid of anything, until you are satified. Profiles are a handy way to have a backup without doing one.
As for address books, you can export any address book, and save it on the hard drive as a .ldif file. Then you can import it into the TB AB.
I have six or seven ABs beside the Personal AB, and the friends.ldif, family.ldif, etc. are imported, and found on the hard drive as impab.mab files, but if they had a name in NS7.1, they will have the same name in TB.
Just a funny one about the name Foxfire which you used. It was probably thought that such name would fit, but there were patents. In quick order, the names Phoenix, Firebird and Firefox came and went. Someone saw some humor, and created the "Firesomething" extention. Every time I start the program it is labelled differently with combination of Fire or something else + some animals. It is Mozilla Sunowl, now
    Not useful, but fun.

    Good Advice

Westside, good advice. And you, make me live up to my profile.

I need that knudge once in a while. At times I get off track and start heading too far to one of the extremes.

From what I'm seeing, I'm only sorry that I didn't make the transition a long time ago. Probably my "conservative" side couple with my experiences in life.

I get into the fast food lane with only 1 person ahead of me and 6 families in the other one. And, yep, the families are served and eating while the guy in front of me wants to know if they have fries without salt or can he get a "Happy Meal" for himself at a Burger King.

Again, thanks to you and Ramona for your insights.
