My sister has a computer with two partitions - the C drive (primary) and a D drive (extended). I want to delete the extended drive only and leave the C drive intact. If I run fdisk to delete the extended drive, what additional steps are necessary to have one primary drive without an extended drive? Can this be accomplished without any additional software? Thanks for reading.

Although you are running 98 I think your thread will get better exposure and advice in the Hardware forum so I have moved it there.

You will need a third party program to resize the primary partition. Can not be done by dos or window commands.
One free program is Presizer (http://zeleps.com/) for FAT16/32 drives only , if you use it read all documentation first. As with any resize program it can mess up and you will have to do a clean install, with that being said they normaly work with no errors. With Presizer you should to a scandisk/surface first and if there are any bad sectors, stop do NOT resize or you Will lose data.

A good pay for program is Power Magic.

Hi TopFarmer - Did as you suggested and went to the "Presizer" website. Listed below is a quote from their FAQ section:

Q: Can Partition Resizer create or delete partitions?

A: No. Use FDISK for this job.

In my case I have no need to copy files from an extended D drive to the primary C drive. I want to delete the extended drive using fdisk and do a reinstall (not clean install) of Win98SE on the C drive. I need to know the steps to following using fdisk to delete the extended partition only. Thanks again.

    Hello jack,

I think TopFarmer answered your question, he gave you the additional steps.

Once you delete the extended partition, which you made plain you know how to do, the C partition needs to be resized, unless you want C to be its original size with the rest of the disk unallocated.

If you don't know how to use Fdisk, below is a part of an MS KB on Fdisk:

Do you wish to enable large disk support (Y/N)?

If you want to use the FAT32 file system, press Y and then press ENTER. If you want to use the FAT16 file system, press N, and then press ENTER.

After you press ENTER, the following Fdisk Options menu is displayed:

    1. Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive
    2. Set active partition
    3. Delete partition or Logical DOS Drive
    4. Display partition information
    5. Change current fixed disk drive
(this option is only available if you have two physical hard disks in the computer)

Press 3, and then press ENTER. The following menu is displayed:

    1. Delete Primary DOS Partition
    2. Delete Extended DOS Partition
    3. Delete Logical DOS Drive(s) in the Extended DOS Partition
    4. Delete Non-DOS Partition

Press 3, and then press ENTER.

The Delete Logical DOS Drive(s) in the Extended DOS Partition screen is displayed with a chart that describes the attributes of your hard disk, as shown in the following example.
Drv Volume Label Mbytes System Usage
    D: (User Defined) 2047 FAT16 100%
    E: (User Defined) 2047 FAT16 100%
    F: (User Defined) 2047 FAT16 100%
    G: (User Defined) 2047 FAT16 100%
    H: (User Defined) 2047 FAT32 17%
    I: (User Defined) 1498 UNKNOWN 13%

Total Extended DOS Partition size is XXX Mbytes (1 MByte = 1048576 bytes).
WARNING! Data in a deleted Logical DOS Drive will be lost.

    Regards - Charles

Great info. Much appreciated. I think I'm half way there. Once the extended partition is deleted, how do I resize the C drive to included the deleted partition? Thanks again.

read my first post on resizeing C: after deleating the extended partition. there are other programs besides the two I listed. Presizer is used only to resize a partition, it is a little harder to use then Power Magic.

I understand it now. I was confused with the resizing. This is a new area for me. Appreciate the help and thanks again.
