    Hello WindowsBBS Members,

I was never offered the MS06-034 (KB917537) "Important" patch at Windows Update yesterday for my computers. Both are running Windows XP Home SP2.

After searching for some information on that patch, I discovered that Windows XP Home SP2 is "not affected" by this vulnerability according to here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-jul.mspx

    and, here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-034.mspx

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Early this morning, I installed the Belarc Advisor Security definitions for July, 2006. When Belarc generated my new report, it indicated that I was missing the KB917537 patch.

I went back to Windows Update to see if I somehow overlooked it and to get it installed. Again, it was not offered.

Now, I'm realizing that it's not offered because of my Operating System. But, Belarc insists that I am missing it.

So, I decided to go get the Security Update for Windows XP (KB917537) and manually install myself.
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...3a-97fc-4e22-8ecc-9416ebc993c4&displaylang=en
The patch successfully installed. And, after a Restart, KB917537 is listed in Add/Remove.

I ran Belarc again and it still reports I'm missing the patch.

Has anyone else with Windows XP Home SP2 experinencing the same? Or, did my Belarc Advisor somehow get corrupted? Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.

I have never run Belarc Advisor, but you don't need the patch (XP Home doesn't have IIS), so what's the worry? Clearly Belarc Advisor is not giving the right advise

This is not the first post where I have seen an issue with Belarc reporting this. I don't think Belarc differentiates between XP Home & Pro when it comes to what updates are required. Seeing as Home doesn't need the update it probably isn't getting installed. Panda does the same to me but I just tell it to ignore updates. I can manage them on my own.

Yes, I just downloaded the latest version (7.1h) of Belarc Advisor and it reports the same "missing" security hotfix.

As Arie and Whiskeyman pointed out, it appears this "missing" hotfix report is nothing to get concerned about.

However, IMO, Belarc Advisor should pay attention to whether the OS is XP Home or Pro in regards to this hotfix. I don't like seeing that big red X near the top of the report even though I know I am being misinformed by Belarc Advisor. If I hadn't seen your post about this before installing this latest version of Belarc Advisor, I would have gone through similar frustration trying to figure it out. Thanks for posting, ski123.

I will send a comment to support@belarc.com in hopes they will fix this.

    Hi mailman,

When and if you get an answer, please post here.

I didn't download the update because reading thru the "read me" decided that it didn't pertain to Home.

Whiskeyman's comment, if I'm reading him right about Panda flagging this, implies that the origin of this miss labeling lies with MS in some fashion.

    Very curious about Belarc's answer.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Whiskeyman,

The Belarc missing hotfix technology does differentiate between different OS editions (such as Home and Pro). In this case, Microsoft just threw us a curve-ball that took a day or so to work around.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Hi, Charles. No need for me to post their reply, I guess. :)

BelarcGuy, THANK YOU for your prompt, professional response! I just installed the update and all is back to normal with Belarc Advisor's report for my machine.

    Thanks again!

    Excellent. :)

    Everything is A-OK now.
Hopefully, this doesn't happen in the next patch batch.

    Thank you all,
