    Just tried again?

    I tried to follow the support path that Microsoft supplies and then saw a problem that I have seen before { No time to install and No size to the install}
Or in other words " 0 KB , 0 minutes " as seen in the description?

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB917283)
Download size: 0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install)
A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system running the Microsoft .NET Framework and gain access to restricted data. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Details...

I think that this is another Microsoft Windows problem and unless someone else knows an answer, I will just wait until they solve their problem with their update. loonychoons Lenny

I just ran into the same issue on a test box with the same update. Also downloaded this patch from Microsoft and tried a manual install with no success.

loonychoons--As you probably know, this is an "important" though not "Critical" update for Net Framework 2.0.
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS06-033.mspx
Were you offered this update from Windows or Microsoft Update? Or did you seek it out on the MS Downloads site?
If the latter, it may not apply to your version of Net Framework.

    Hi Jim:

Yes ,Jim ,I am aware of your information that you informed me of. If I never get that update that would be fine, as I do not need or use Net Framework, also my version should have taken the new update with no repercussions ,as I do have the latest. Also ,yes this was a normal update offered from Microsoft One of a PKG. of Five.

What I hate is my system telling me over and over and over again that an update is available for downloading! even when I ask to hide that update and not to show it again? I am pretty sure that the update was and is installed properly, but my computer for some reason will not acknowledge it? I feel this because the original update was 778KB when I installed it ,but now it is 0 KB and 0 min to install. We know that is not right Thanks Lenny

The Zero bit business is because the update as been downloaded and is awaiting install. It's the install that won't work. Mine is the same as you have described.

So, if you try over, and over, it is the same, "Failed to install" and you can see this on the Update History.

Maybe you will get the solution from Microsoft. Please share it with the others as I will think that many have the same situation.

Since this is a Security update, you should be able to get free tech service from MS at 1-866-PCSAFETY (US and Canada only). Or is this the contact you have already made? (Have you heard back?)

    MS One Care?
Perhaps the download file you get from them is corrupt. Try Windows Update directly (unless that is where "Microsoft One" sends you).
Also does the Update 917283 show in Control Panel|Add/Remove? (Under "Windows XP--Software UPDates" when you have the box "Show Updates" at the top of the page checked.) If so, Remove.

You could run a search on 917283 to see if you have any files for it on your PC.

FWIW--the latest version of Net Framework is version 3.0.

Thank you for you advise and the Web Site,Jim.

Jim I am pretty sure that the problem update install was the last one in the list? Also it is highly possible that one or both of the following may have taken place!!

    - The installation of a program that uses Windows Installer (for
example, Microsoft Office 2000) is interrupted.

    - There are multiple instances of Setup running at the same time, or
an instance of Setup is "blocked. "

Jim, this was completely my own fault if that is what happened?

    Thanks again Lenny

    Hi Lenny,

You're not the only one with this problem, so the answer is no :)

    I would recommend:

Shut AU off completely in the Security Center, that would get rid of the notices.

Disabling Automatic Updates doesn't preclude you from going to the Windows Update site manually:

Start menu > all Programs > Windows Update.

Once there, you choose which update to install. I would also space updates out over a period of time - meaning, lets say do one a day. Critical updates create System Restore points for roll back should it prove necessay. The highest priority should be given to any critical patch to IE.

Since MS has instituted once a month updates around the middle of a month, the 15th of the month would be the time to do this.

I would forget about this particular .Net patch issue since you don't use this software. If you have it on your system, you can get rid of it - I don't have it. If you ever run a 3rd party software that needs .Net, the software will let you know and can download/install then.

    Regards - Charles

    Thanks Charles.

If I could remove those Updates, I would, in fact I had that in Mind when That Tech suggested that I remove them, And then Leave them uninstalled.

However I am now having another problem, as I described to Jim in post #11 in this thread. Please see this and start reading at the name "Judy "

I will also turn off my Microsoft Windows AU notification. That is all that I have on. I check for updates manually on all my other programs, so now this one will be no Different. Thank you for reminding me of that option. I just thought that it would be handy to know when Microsoft updates where available.

Is there any other way to delete Updates other than that "Add or Remove" option in Control Panel.

I did read somewere that NET, Framework 1.1 service pack 1 could not be uninstall after installation.

Charles And Jim Thank You for your Interest and your time. Lenny

P.S.Jim: That Installer clean up utility ,did not seem to help, but thank for that info I may need it sometime

    Hi Lenny,

If the Add/Remove entries don't work, criticals do create System Restore entries.

So, was the .Net patch the first update you attempted, because if it wasn't, then if you use SR to roll back the patch prior to .Net, the restore will also get rid of the .Net patch file on your system.

Then if you really want the patch whose SR point you used, re install that one. I don't see anywhere in this thread where the other four updates are creating problems.

Hope I'm making myself clear :)

Or just ignore the whole thing. The only reason to straighten this out now is because it prevents the update or prevents a newer version being installed. Do you care?

The only reason to have .Net updated security wise is if it is being used. If not being used, whether its secure or insecure is moot.

    Regards - Charles

    Charles: Thank you.

You probably would not understand just how much you have eased my concern over this situation. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I tend to worry over the smallest and silliest of things

Now I will just mellow and just let things fall into place as they might.

Later I might find a good Restore point, and utilize it, but I will leave well enough alone for now.

Funny, Both my Sons have been telling me exactly what you have said.

    Thanks Truly ---- Lenny

loonychoons--Somewhat disappointed there was no real fix for this problem. But ignoring it, if you do not use Net Framework, seems a good workaround.
Don't you have Microsoft Net Framework, itself, in Control Panel|Add/Remove? You could remove it. I see Judy Wu suggested this (but for a different reason).

Believe me I have tried and Tried again!!!

Jim: No matter What I do I can not Remove {Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1} or the {Service patch Hotfix KB886903 for 1.1} or {Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0} it just won't let me and I get either a freeze up or all kinds of warning messages.

    I have now Restored back to July 7th before all this {&%#*@} started, my list of Programs listed in Add or Remove still shows Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 as still there?? But my update web site say that I still need this important critical update??I turned off AU but I could not stand the balloon pooping up all the time saying { that my computer could be at risk!!}

    I am back to just notify me and hide that {%$*&^} update. I will just have to put up with that GREAT BIG warning {you have made a big mistake in hiding an important critical update RESTORE RIGHT AWAY}

Boy it sure takes that Tech enough time to get back to me??? I am glad that I am not holding my breath.

    Thanks Guys Lenny
