Hi there. Am running Norton System Works 2005 and have a problem when running the virus checker. The programme will only run for so long then the pc will shut down and reboot. Sometimes it will run almost to the end of the check, opther times half way through. I have re-installed the programme , updated the virus definitions and disabled the cable modem in case that was the problem, but still it will shut down before it finishes the task. Does this mean I have somes sort of virus or trojan .

    Norton virus check not completing

    Hi Charles,

Followed your link to the Housecall site from Trend and let them do a full scan on my PC. Took a while but it found a stealth virus problem lurking in there ready to shut down the computer to avoid detection, plus some other spyware. Anyway, they cleaned up and deleted the problem from my machine, ran a second scan as suggested and it found no problem on the second scan. Have now ran Norton again and it completed it's task successfully to the end. So now I have a clean machine, with updated virus definitions and a completed virus check.

Have not followed the second link as yet, but will look at that now.

What I think is great, is the fact that I have not really had any problems with my pc for quite sometime, but it's good to know, that folks like yourself are out there with solutions and help should it be required.

Many, many thanks again for your inspirational assistance.

    Regards from Scotland

    Ron

    Norton again

    Hi again Charles,

Just remembered yesterday in the middle of all the chaos that I had discovered that my Windows XP Firewall had been turned off. It's now back on but what a mess I could have been in.

    Thanks again

    Ron

    Hi Ron,

Thanks for the good words - always nice to hear :)

I would recommend a followup with a HighjackThis log to clean out any remnents or any other problems.
I'm moving this thread to the Virus/Spyware Removal section.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Ron,

Don't see any problems - Pete and TeMerc will also look thru the log to see if there is anything I missed.

You can become a Contributing Member. One of the benefits is the ability to upload images to the BBS.

    Hi, RonS.

Just in case you're also running the new version of Webroot's Spy Sweeper (version 5.0.5 build 1286), I have read posts in another forum where people have a similar problem while running Spy Sweeper 5.0.5. They report that their scans complete if they first shut down Spy Sweeper.
