    Hello,

I am not sure if I am in the right section, I have never posted before.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with XP SP 2 Home Edition that is 2.52 GHz and 128 MB of RAM that is booting up very slow when it gets to the desktop, it takes about 10 minutes until I can do anything. At times I can move the mouse around, but anything I click on takes forever to execute. Eventually it does behave pretty normal. This is not my computer, I am helping out a friend, so I am not exactly sure what normal is. My friend said that it used to be fine and all of a sudden it was slow. I asked if he installed anything recently and he said no. I have disabled all of the startup items in MSCONFIG one by one and still have the problem. I have also reseated the cables for the hard drive and CD drives, ran the Dell diagnostics for all of the hardware and everything has passed. When I boot it up in Safe Mode, it starts up fine. I have also done a checkdisk, defrag and cleaned up the temporary internet files.

Here is the the HijackThis log if that helps...

Hello Amy and welcome to the Board :) ,

The first thing that strikes me is 128 MB of RAM - not enough for XP - at least 250 and 512 best.

This site http://www.crucial.com/index.asp?AID=5032655&PID=316093 will come up with suitabe RAM for your system, enter the specs.

And there is a lot of processes running that should be on demand, not started at boot up. These are just ones that I picked.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXBCES.EXE Lexmark process
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXPPS.EXE

    C:\Program Files\Dell AIO Printer A940\dlbabmgr.exe Printer again

    C:\Program Files\Dell AIO Printer A940\dlbabmon.exe Printer

I have that printer/scanner, and disabled those processes

    Read thru this thread http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=39425
for links to data bases for info on the processes starting up.

Aside from using Mike Lin's program to keep anything from inserting itself in the startup folders: I use Autoruns find startups and shut them down:

    http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html
I also notice parts of McAfee and Network Associates, aside for Grisoft:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Network Associates Error Reporting Service] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Network Associates\TalkBack\TBMon.exe "

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [McAfeeUpdaterUI] "C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\UpdaterUI.exe" /StartedFromRunKey

Can't find any other McAfee processes, remnents from an uninstall or did you download them in an attemot to find problems?

    Regards - Charles

    Thanks!

Yes, I agree, that is too little RAM. I am going to suggest to him to increase it.

The Autoruns utility is a wonderful tool!! I have used it to disable many of the unnecessary processes. The thread that you referred me too is also great. I have used the links to look up what all of the running processes are......very helpful! The startup time has gotten better, but it's still slow. The hard drive is just cranking when the computer gets to the desktop. I am going to continue to look thought the Autoruns to see what else I can disable.

As far as the McAfee question......he had the McAfee Security Center installed and I uninstalled that and installed McAfee VirusScan version 8.

Charles - thank you so much for all of your help and suggestions! It's much appreciated!

    Amy
