I had some programs starting with windows but not anymore. I start windows, then start these programs manually and choose their option to start up with windows, restart and they will start normally with windows, the next time I reboot it will go back to square one. I looked in msconfig and I do not even find the name of the programs in the startup list, any help please??

I couldn't say why that happens, but I could offer you a workaround.

Create shortcuts to the programs and put them in the Startup folder.
I can't see it in Help and Support so I'll give you my version.

Go to Start -> All Programs, right click on the programs title, select Copy. Now go to the listing Startup, right-click and select Open. Right-click in the open folder and select paste (or go to Edit -> Paste).

They should run every boot, but that will run them in full windows. If you want them to run in the background, you will need to find the program that runs the background version (you could see them and their path using msconfig). Find them using Windows Explorer, right-click on the .exe and choose Create Shortcut. Cut and paste the shortcut into All Programs -> Startup.

It does work, but if there is someone who knows why this happens and maybe a fix is better. You can notice that although now these programs start with windows they all have their windows startup options unchecked and if you do check this option and restart you will find it unchecked again

Just a thought so that others may see something. If it was Win 98 I would suspect that the registry could not be loaded and it was defaulting to a previous version.

I suspect windows update is the cause, since my other computer now has the same problem as well

Very strange. For the first time I am hearing of startup programs not starting, usually its the other way round - most of the programs auto start, whether you like them to or not.

I would suggest that you thoroughly check your computer for virus/malware after running chkdsk on the drive.

Are "any" Startup programs loading during boot up?
If yes, what are the program names.
Also provide program names which should have loaded, but did not.
Just looking for a starting point ... and if perchance some / one of these programs has a dominant attitude. Example how some programs constantly steal file type association. Any chance this mix of will load / won't load (at boot) involve media type programs?
Also what type of security tools are you running which have "Registry write" watch dogs for programs requesting to be added to "Startup group ". An example of one I use is Spybot's "TeaTimer ".

Over the years with all versions of Windows I have found that things loaded at should be limited to what is actually necessary.

    Such as Anti-Virus, Firewall etc.

I have found through some experience ) that it pays ( big time ) to keep what loads at bootup down to the absolute necessities.

Loading too many things may cause confusion for the system.

Some programs do require something to be loaded at boot up. And if this part is not fully loaded before the 2nd part things may not go right.

    My Bottom line;
Loading things at startup may not always save time.

The only program that kept on starting without any trouble was the DU Meter, programs that were working normally for the last 6 months without any trouble but now had to be put in the startup folder to open with windows are AI Roboform,web2pop,synaptics touchpad driver enhancer, windows live messenger and AVG control centre icon.

I scanned computer with spybot found some adware which I removed but problem persisted and I also scanned for viruses but found nothing, as I said now the same problem is on my other computer also which runs with almost identical software.

I also created keys in regedit HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Run e.g "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background they did work and where listed in msconfig startup list and and in tuneup utilities 2006 startup manager but worked only once ( they were not in the run once folder) even their respective options to startup with windows where all unchecked after they booted once

I do not understand that at all. If they were all running OK why did they need to be put into Startup ?

If I read correctly they were all running OK until they were put in the Start Up folder. This bring only one thought to mind CONFLICTS. But wait for more ideas just in case I am thinking wrong.

Sorry, maybe I did not explain myself properly. They where working OK then came this problem that only DU Meter was starting with windows, I tried selecting again their respective options to startup with windows, they started once ok but on next reboot failed to start, checked their startup with windows options and found them all unchecked. The only way to keep on restarting was to put their shortcuts in the startup folder. Something that I did not mention before is that I made also a repair install but nothing changed.
