    I created a webpage with embedded music so that when it loads in IE, the music just starts playing when the webpage is loaded. This is what I want to happen in Mozilla, but when the page loads I get an interruption asking how I want to open this file. When I specified WMP, the window opens and the WMP window is on top. I do not want any window at all, I just want it to play. How do I do this in Mozilla and maybe Firefox?

    Hi ackerberg,

    I don't know if this will work for you, but you might try a little free program called QuickPlay. Originally written for Win9x, it works perfectly with XP. It doesn't need to be installed, but you do have to associate it with the .wav filetype.

    QuickPlay has no interface and no settings, but it does display a button in the taskbar while it's playing a .wav file. It's hard to find, but I located a site from which it can be downloaded. It's file #8 on this page.

    HTH.

    Bob,

    This is the code I used on my Media Test Page for an embedded WAV file. The file plays on open, with no controller to view.

    Code:
    <OBJECT CLASSID= "clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B"
    WIDTH= "0" HEIGHT= "0 "
    CODEBASE= "http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab ">
    	<PARAM name= "src"        VALUE= "stopwomn.wav ">
            <PARAM name= "autoplay"   VALUE= "true ">
    	<PARAM name= "controller" VALUE= "false ">
            <PARAM NAME= "volume"     VALUE= "100 ">
            <PARAM NAME= "type"       VALUE= "audio/x-wav ">

            <EMBED SRC= "stopwomn.wav"
    	TYPE= "audio/x-wav "
    	WIDTH= "0"
            HEIGHT= "0"
            VOLUME= "100 "
    	AUTOPLAY= "true"
    	CONTROLLER= "false"
            PLUGINSPAGE= "http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ ">
    </EMBED>

    </OBJECT>
    Or you can use this very simple code:
    Code:
    <embed src= "stopwomn.wav" width= "0" height= "0" autostart= "true ">
    I use QuickTime's plugin for WAV files, but as you want to use Media Play, this is the Code you will need:
    Code:
    <OBJECT classid= "CLSID:6BF52A52-394A-11D3-B153-00C04F79FAA6 "
                   type= "application/x-oleobject" width= "0" height= "0 "
                   codebase= "http://activex.microsoft.com/activex/controls/mplayer/en/nsmp2inf.cab#Version=6,4,5,715 "
    Then list parameters that you want....
    Any chance you could give a link for your embedded file?
    Does the "Ask what player to use" come up every time you open the page?
    Have you installed the ActiveX plugin for Mozilla? You will need the plugin in order to use Media Player. You can download it here:

    Thanks Jim and Ramona,
    The web page is www.massphil.org and after the page loads you should get a short wave file of Beethoven's 5th. In my Mozilla, I get a bunch of junk about the page loading, but in IE it is seamless.
    I am using a 1M wave file but was thinking of changing it to a mp3 file to make the file smaller and the loading faster for those who have slower internet connections. Please let me know what happens when you load the page. Thanks.

    Hi Bob,

    I have an Optimum Online cable internet connection. The massphil page loads quickly with Firefox 1.5.0.4, and the music begins playing immediately, but I can't tell what's providing the sound. I don't see the QuickPlay button I mentioned earlier, and the only plug-in that seems to be associated with music is Crescendo, which usually opens a small window, as well as a taskbar button.

    All I can tell you is that the seamless loading you experience with IE is what I get with FF. I've looked at the site with both FF and IE, and FF loads faster. I have no experience with the Mozilla suite.

    Hi Jim and Ramona,
    I changed the file from a .wav to a .mp3 and reduced the size by a factor of 10 so it would download faster into a browser. Would you both mind checking the homepage again and listening for the music? Many thanks.
    The homepage is: www.massphil.org

    Hi Bob,

    Truthfully, I liked it better when it was a .wav file. In its present form, it requires Firefox's Crescendo plug-in to run, with the results seen in the accompanying screenshot.

    Also, I thought the .wav file played more than just the opening measures of the 5th (you may have edited the file when you converted it to .mp3 format ... if you turn your volume up and listen carefully, you can hear a fraction of the next note :)).

    I did so much fumbling around that I must have forgotten to post.
    I can listen to the sound using FF1.5.0.4, Seamonkey1.0.2, and NS8.1 (Firefox mode), without opening any player. SM1.0.2 has a View|Page Info, unlike the other browsers, and the Media tab shows a beeth.mp3 embed.
    I did not get a chance to check the original version.
    Winamp is my default mp3 player, and with Firefox3.0a1, which does not have all the plugins, may be, Winamp will open, after a long head scratching period.

    Hi Jim,
    What you got, the little box, is what I had until I installed QuickTime and then it played seamlessly in both Mozilla and Firefox. If you look at preferences you might not have a program associated with the mp3 file? My firefox associates MMJB which is Music Match Jukebox, but you can associate WM player and Quicktime as well.
    There is a little glitch at the end of the 8 notes because when I extracted it, I did not want the 8th note to sound like it was cut off. So I left a little extra and that is what you hear.
    The .wav file may sound better but it is over 1M while the mp3 is about 100K and it should download a lot faster.
    Thanks for your help.

    That little fraction of a note sounds like someone in the orchestra hiccuped. :)

    If you really wanted to :)D), you could use something as simple as the Windows Sound Recorder to edit out the "hiccup" in the original .wav file before converting it to.mp3.

    Free concerts? I may have to drive down there one of these days. Do you play, or are you just on the support side?

    Jim,
    The concerts are free with no tickets and you will enjoy the concerts far beyond your expectations. We really have some of the best soloists in the world! and you can not beat the price.
    For directions, go to the program page, click on the school address which will bring up Mapquest and type in your address.
    I have already edited the file to 1/100 second using a fairly decent program. If I try to cut out the hiccup, I end up cutting off the last note of the second de-de-de-dum which is even worse. It's best to leave it the way it is. It is possible that the hiccup was not as obvious as it is with the mp3 file, but it was there also.
    You are welcome to come to one of our concerts. Bring some guests!

    Bob,

    Glad you were able to get those two measures to work in Firefox. The WAV file does sound just a bit better, altho using an MP3 file is better with those who have slow dialup connections. I do have to turn my speakers to a very high level in order to hear the music. I have a Soundblaster Live! Plus Sound card, and normally have to leave the speakers on a low level in order not to blast myself out of the small bedroom I use for my office.

    Looks as if you're way ahead of me in HTML. ;)

    Ramona-
    I am using Dreamweaver for making the webpages and it is hard to beat that program for constructing the pages. In fact, the learning curve is very small for simple things. I still do not know about creating frames and the more intricate things. I was also able to learn a little javascript to introduce a password onto the last page, which is programming.
    The code for introducing the music came right out of a book on how to use Dreamweaver and it is simpler than any of those, except for the real short one, you have displayed above.
    I'm happy that the music is not too loud, it could make people jump out of their chairs :)
